Kyoto Gardens finished!

kg1
Okay, so this fabulous quilt is called Kyoto Gardens from the book, Stellar Quilts by Judy Martin, found here. Jan pieced this quilt and took a little liberty with the design and added borders and things that she wanted for her master bedroom quilt.  It is a beautiful design and quilt that I had a lot of fun quilting. The quilt is around 94 x 104, so it is big.

kg2
I love this center part of the quilt.  I had a lot of fun playing in this area.

kg3
This is one layer of batting, Hobbs bleached 108 wide cotton. It worked out perfect for the quilting and for the size of the quilt.

kg4
I used Glide thread and bobbins for the thread on this quilt.  I had two thread colors, Cream and Military Gold.

kg5
There was a lot of ruler work, so I used my A1 ruler and my favorite disappearing purple marker to make the designs come to life.  Those items are found here.

kg6
You can see in the above picture that the outside cream borders were different sizes, but I wanted to be able to have the same quilting all the way around the quilt.  In the bigger area, I added a few more lines and details, but a few squares in - that way the design could flow better.  I hope that makes sense...you can see how the design gradually becomes bigger.

kg7
I used the pieced squares in the red border fabrics to come up with the on-point square designs.  I think it worked out perfectly.

kg8
I have to say I did have a lot of fun with these border treatments.  I allowed the piecing to do the talking and filled in the rest with quilting designs that fit the quilt.

kg10

kg11
I love how the corner design makes a geometric heart shape.  Just perfect!

kg12
Here's another look at the quilting detail on the entire quilt.

kg13

kg14
I have to admit, ruler work is hard, time consuming and sometimes just plain old boring!  But, the end result is always worth it and I am so happy with how this design worked out for this quilt.

kg15
The stars look so amazing, not a lot of detail, but just enough lines and fillers to make the piecing stand out.  I always want the piecing to shine and have the quilting just add to it without taking away from it.

kg16
Ahh, that texture is so amazing! I love it!

kg17
Jan also made two pillow shams, this is going to be an amazing set up on her bed!

Okay, I hope you enjoyed that quilt.  It really was a lot of fun quilting - now on the next project!  I am also getting ready and excited for my classes in Paducah, I hope to see you there - info here.

One more thing, my books and dvd's are on sale and the sale ends todayish... be sure to order yours if you haven't had a chance yet.

I don't have the words to adequately say what I'd like to say about this quilt and your quilting, Judi! Nothing less than pure perfection! Breath taking!!! There are times and quilt finishes of my own that make me all puffed up with pride and then I see this work of art and I'm knocked right off my silly high horse and realize that I still have a long, long way to go!! Great job, Jan and Judi! This is a masterpiece.

WOW!!! Your quilted knocked my socks off! I'm glad the piecing whispered what it wanted you to do because your quilting sure enhanced it. Thank you so much for sharing each and every photo as well as the description. I echo all the other adjectives people used like stunning, masterpiece, breath taking, etc!

Judi! This is sooooo amazing!! gorgeous. perfect, really.

The other day, I had just posted a photo on IG of my recent quilting and then scrolled down my feed to see a picture of this quilt - which, of course, stopped me dead in my tracks. My first thought was - that. is. perfection. My next thought was - I need to delete my post; my work is crap! The next was - That would make Judi sad - she wants to encourage and inspire quilters, not discourage them. I quickly readjusted my attitude ;-) and you know what? for ME - the quilting is pretty darn good.

Thanks for sharing your (jaw-dropping) work with us. Thanks for inspiring beauty, and enjoying it. Thanks for giving us (me) goals to work towards (however unattainable they may be for mere mortals ;-)

I am really curious how you handle thread starts and stops. I'm sure you eliminate them when possible, but it looks (to my untrained eye) that there are quite a few in this quilt - especially in the cream border that has the pez candy like shapes. do you knot and bury all those threads? or take a few tiny stitches and just snip threads? or something else entirely...?

Congratulations on a(nother) fabulous finish ~ Tracy

As always, your work completely amazes and enchants me, Judi! Your eye for complementary design is impeccable, and the execution is spot on. Thank you for sharing the beauty and inspiration. Every time I take out the quilt you did for me (the purple/green/yellow dragonfly quilt) to give it its turn on the feature wall, it fascinates Scott and I and any visitors to the house all over again!
