That time I fell in my rollerblades. Goals.

So, I had major plans for the new year as far as getting healthy again.  Seriously. Last year I lost 15 pounds in the first month of running - then I let myself go and gain 20 pounds back on.  I think it was a combination of my first year of teaching and the lack of time I felt I had.  Priorities though, right? Oh, also - I like food.

So, for Christmas Clint bought me rollerblades.  I was a kid again and exercise sounded fun.  I took my kids down to the running path and we had a fabulous time.  Me on my rollerblades, and the kids on their bikes.  There is a hill down to the running path and the first time I went down I felt like I was going to fall, but I didn't.  The road is not smooth and I was hauling down pretty darn fast.  Fast forward to a few days later - the actual day of my new life with exercise involved and we were going as a family down to the running path.  I was afraid to go down, so I asked Clint to help me.  He was trying to get me down by having me hold onto his bike, but my daughter Lili was also in rollerblades and she needed help too.  So, stubborn me - I decided to just go for it.

That was pretty much the worst decision I could have made.  I knew I would fall - I was scared of the hill and it was a dumb decision to do it on my own.  But, the ironic thing is that the butt that I am trying to trim down is the thing that saved me during the fall.  I hit down hard, I am still wearing a bruise and it was a week and a half ago. I can laugh about it now, but it was a lesson that I guess I needed to learn.  So, I will be running.  I am happy to say that I will rollerblade, but I will drive down the hill and put my rollerblades on when I am there.  Also, I have gone running two days in a row.  I couldn't feel better.

So, my goals this year are simple enough.  They are the goals that I make for myself every year, but I am hoping I will do better.  I want to exercise.  I want to eat healthy.  I want to read more. I want to spend each moment I can with my husband and children.  I want to quilt better. I want to choose to be happy and optimistic. It's funny how easy it is to let yourself be drug down by all negative crap in the world - so, to help with that - I took my news apps off my phone.  When I need words of encouragement (like everyday), I will read scripture.

I realize that 2014 was an amazing year, but I am hoping that 2015 will be even better and I will be a healthier me. I wish you all the best as you are making your goals for the new year.

As a former serious figure skater and ice dancer, I know the power of the butt -- and those bruises. I hope you are applying heat at this point to help the tissue absorb that injury.
I love roller blades too.
We just got a cool Nordic track treadmill. I am psyched about it as my hubbs works at home and we spend the entire day on the main level of our home. So the treadmill is right there in front of the tv, just steps away from my sewing room/ kitchen.
Scripture is a good thing. We need it every day.

Love your goals! I have some very similar ones this year! I too, deleted some social media apps from my phone, because of the negativity, it's kinda amazing how much weight was lifted from me when I let that crap go. :)

Its nice to hear real life goals!!

I've been working through Beth Moore's study of the book of Daniel. Its been so encouraging and opened my eyes to lots of things I've never known before. I highly recommend it!

I am hoping that 2015 will bring a healthier me as well. Finally (after a year), I have recovered from spine surgery, and I just need to get my diet under control.

We always get into trouble when our vision becomes horizontal instead of vertical!!!! I'm glad you survived your "life lesson"!!!

I hope you're wearing wrist guards! I got a hairline fracture from going down on my rollerblades. Without the wrist guard the Dr. said it surely would have been a bad break requiring a cast. Have fun! Love your blog :)

Oh, no! Gosh, I would be a mess on rollerblades. I'm horrible with my balance - Taekwondo pushes it bad enough. ;D Here's to a good 2015!

Good for you getting fit! I started last January and I am down 68 pounds to date with 20 more to go, I will succeed! It truly is a mindset. As for encouraging I recommend two blogs for inspirational reads....the first is
The Enchanting Rose on blogspot and her mothers blog which is sooooo very inspirational
She graces her home also on blogspot. Enjoy and happy blading!

Get to the sporting good store and get some wrist guards before you get on the blades again. You will be so glad you did. Can't tell you how many people we see in the E.R. with a wrist fracture from a fall on an outstretched hand. You put that hand out automatically to save yourself, and then you wear the cast for the next 6-8 weeks, lol.

Good for you--setting goals, and removing the stuff that really doesn't matter. As for exercise, sometimes it is tough to fit in, but you just have to carve out that time for yourself. For me, it's a habit really early in the morning, when I can't talk myself out of it or other demands push it aside. When I'm done, I say, "Exercise--check!", as if I'm checking it off my daily to-do list.
Good luck and stay committed!

you can be amazed at how much 15 min everyday of hard exercise will do for you get a jump rope /hula-hoop/deck of cards and give each suit a exercise and do a few rounds4-5 of them as many reps as on the card you draw you have to make it fun I work in a restaurant and love food also --and I am going to be 50 its a commitment!
and please take cake of those wrists I agree you quilt so beautifully

I love your goals for this year, sound a lot like mine, although I will not be rollerblading. I might try couch to 5K-working my way into it. I look forward to following your progress and trusting you will meet your goals. Thanks for the lovely quilting you share with all of us.

I agree with the first comment because I was thinking the very same thought. How could you possibly quilt any better? Maybe you could go twice as fast? Your quilts are stunning. I am a very simple quilter and am quite happy to do what I do. No one else in my family can quilt so to them what I do is just fabulous. I will never enter a quilt show.

I, too, need to eat better. New studies show that sugar is just as bad for our hearts as alcohol. Chocolate always has sugar in it. So sad, but true.

I need to exercise more than once a week. I need to reach out more and not be so happy to be a retired person. So much to do and so little time.

I laugh when I read your post....I keep thinking there's a runner inside me that wants to get out but I am so afraid of falling!

Looking forward to classes with you in Ontario this year!

Ouch! My husband bought me a bike in September, same kind of thing, I hadn't been exercising and was complaining that all my clothes had shrunk... smirk... I had a great time the first day on the bike, but the second time out we went to a greenway that has dirt trails and wooden bridges over swampy areas, very pretty with trees and wildflowers and deer. But there are these poles right in the middle of the path at the beginning of the bridges, I guess to prevent cars from trying to drive on them, and I came around a sharp corner and clipped the stupid pole. I did NOT land on my cushy butt, instead I scraped all the skin off my right forearm, elbow, knee and shin. And then my arm got infected, which was gross... But I got back on the bike as soon as I could. It's not even so much about the pounds you lose -- I just feel SO MUCH BETTER about EVERYTHING after I go for a bike ride through the woods.

Good luck with your bruises as well as your goals for the new year. Don't give up; every day is a fresh new gift! Thanks so much for your inspiration and encouragement throughout the year.

I'm so happy to read it all ended in a bruise and nothing more serious.
My advice for loosing weight is the 5:2 method, worked like a charm for me combined with the Hairy Bikers Diet cookbook (there are 3 of them) with recipes that is 500kcal or less and still taste fabulous.

Good luck with your new life :)
