Oh, how mean! LOL The movie must have terrified her as a child and left scars! Is Jessie your niece? She looks like you!

In rat-running (psychology department experiments with rats) there's a term called "successive approximations" where if you want the rats to do something you get them to approximate the behavior in tiny steps getting closer and closer to the behavior you want them to do. Same thing with people only it has a prettier name - desensitizing.

Maybe start telling her you're going to show her a picture of ET; then show the picture; then show the doll from across the room; then show the doll from a little closer; then let her touch the fabric the doll is made of, etc., etc. Little steps over weeks or months. My sympathies to her - phobias can be pee-your-pants scary (yes, I HAVE been there :D)

One of my son's favorite Halloween costumes from when he was little was the ET costume I made. We still have it in his baby trunk. Minus one foot that went walkabout when one of the cousins borrowed the costume.

Oh..I can't believe you were so BAD to your Sister on her BIRTHDAY!
It was funny until I realized that she was crying...then I wanted to make the scary toy go away. I think you owe Jessie, big time!

...and I thought that me and MY sisters were the meanest on the planet! You know she's gonna get you back someday, when you least expect it. ;-)

That was, um, not really very nice. What's ridiculous to you is obviously very real to her. I mean, it seems funny from this side, but stuff like that's really only funny if everybody's laughing. I didn't see everybody laughing, did you? So instead of joking, what's that other word we hear a lot these days? When people tease somebody, but the other person doesn't find it funny... The person doing the teasing calls it harmless fun, but the person being teased dies a little inside each time... Oh yeah... We call in bullying.

You know, my sister is terrified of clowns. While I've been tempted to do something like that to her, I never would, because I know it wouldn't be funny to her. And if it wouldn't be funny to her, then it wouldn't be funny to me. But it's nice that all of you had a good laugh at your sister's expense. Nice example for the kids, too. Way to teach them to be sympathetic to someone else's fears. Epic fail, y'all.

Hey you all! This is Jessie the sister who is deathly afraid of ET. This was the best birthday prank ever. I have the best sense of humor in the world. And even though I was crying, I have been laughing ever since. You should have seen the rest of the "full" video to see me laughing. I loved it! Also, to let you know, ET is in my drawer..... I will always keep him.....But only IN MY DRESSER! HA HA HA Otherwise I wouldn't have let Judi put this up on her blog. I LOVE MY FAMILY!

BowieKitten said...

Oh, my. That poor, poor girl. Yes, Jessie, I'd keep him, too. In my dresser. In the barn. Under the huge pile of gas-soaked rags. (I've heard they can do interesting things when left to their own devices for too long.)

BTW, I'm ABengel's sister...the one who's terrified of clowns. Yes, I would still love her if she gave me a clown for my birthday, obviously, and I'd get a big chuckle out of it, after my initial freak-out. I might even forgive her after she smeared it all over my poor, cringing head while I flipped out. But she'd be darned-well paying for the therapy! Then, Jessie, I'd bring it to you so it could keep E.T. company. Locked in the dresser drawer. In the barn. Under the gas-soaked rags. Forever and ever. To let nature take its course.

And now, after some serious thought about that, I'm rather positive I'd never quite trust my sister, again. Love her, yes. Be able to laugh at myself, yes. Forgive her, yes. But trust her the same way, again? Hmmmmm..... not so sure about that one.
And I'd certainly give her the honor of opening any of her future gifts FOR me.

It was funny I have to admit but whe I saw she was crying, I wanted to cry with her. But hey, what are families for???

That's hilarious! Thanks for the entertainment Jessie!

My youngest daughter was afraid ET when she was little, so I can understand how Jessie feels. We have bugged my daughter about being afraid of ET on occaision also, the rest of us thought ET was cute, but she certainly didn't.
Too funny, but I hope Jessie wasn't too creeped out.
