Broken Hearted

Okay, so every designer's dream is to have a book published.  This has been my dream and last year, my dream came true with a "go ahead, let's do this" by a big publishing company.  I worked my butt off for 4 months, it was a hard time for my family because I was cramped down with deadlines and I was so stressed out.  Stressed out Mama means stressed out family. So, I finally got everything done - I felt so excited and relieved that I could send out my projects and be done and just wait for that book to arrive in the mail.

Well, the time came that the book was to come out, my editor was not getting back to me.  I just wanted to see my cover and be able to share with you, my readers that it was actually happening.  This happened for months and my original release date had passed by, I finally got someone to respond to me and turns out my editor was no longer with the company, but my book was coming out in July.  With a promise of preview pictures I kept waiting.  Well, I got an email yesterday saying that the VP of Editorial would like to have a phone conversation.  In my gut I knew what was going to happen, then all day yesterday she never called.  This morning she got a hold of me and told me that they decided not to publish my book.  Wow, shock, sadness - and I was just listening thinking, really?  So, no one ever bothered to tell me months ago?  All I could think about was how hard I worked, how everyone around the blog world has a book, and it just seems like it would be my turn.  Then, the reasoning - apparently my quilting was "too good" - okay?  So, I should have just not put as much effort into my work and maybe it would have worked out?  I guess their readers are beginners and their buyers didn't want it.  I understand that publishers are out to make money, and I guess I can wrap my head around the fact that maybe I wouldn't have sold enough for them, but I just can't wrap my head around the fact that my projects were too good. I pour my heart into every project I do and my book was no different.  I feel like if I share my talents, then it will encourage everyone in the quilting world to do their best and go after their own goals.

So, perspective - maybe things will work out better than before... Maybe I can publish it myself?  Or maybe another publisher wants to take it on.  Then, I think about it and realize, what publisher is going to take on a "axed" project?  It's all just so disheartening, I have been bawling for the last couple hours and I wasn't going to say anything about it.  Then I thought that maybe if I just get it all out in the open, and let you know that I don't have a book coming out then I just might feel a sense of closure...is that the right word?  Maybe the Lord just wants to keep me humble so that I remember and realize that quilting isn't everything and that I have a husband and children that I care for more than a book.  Anyway, I will just cry for a little bit, take a day off quilting and hold my head up high and start again tomorrow...

Judi, I can't begin to imagine how heart breaking that is! I'm sorry you were "led on" for so long. Don't give up, I'm POSITIVE another publisher would give your book the time of day. And I would be one of the first in line to buy it. You are excellent at what you do, and while I know my quilting will never be as amazing as yours, I would love to have your book in front of me as inspiration while I try!

I am so sorry you are experiencing this. I will tell you though - books that get axed by one publisher get published by another ALL the time. It just wasn't right for THAT particular publisher. DO NOT giveup. This comes from experience...I don't have a book but I do have some other things in the works and some of them were rejected by one party and accepted by another. Now did you have a signed contract? That is important.... I am so sorry you experienced this and my heart breaks for you, but it's going to happen for you. :) I'm sure of it. :) Go have your good cry - I don't care what anyone says, it makes you feel better!!!

I'm so sorry to hear that! I would've been majorly bummed as well.

I would go ahead and self-publish. I know somebody who does this (in another realm) and one of the perks is having control over your own work.

Check this out. http://www.freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/2012/05/quilt-biz-7-self-publishing.html

Leah Day self-published, so can you .
good luck. your quilting is fantabulous! i can only aspire to be a tenth of your quality. Claire

You should look into publishing it yourself. You already have a great website and store. Get a small quantity printed and see how it goes. Your work is beautiful.

Hi Judy, How disappointing for you. I would have bought the book, and I barely machine quilt. I'm sure another company will want to publish it. HUGS !! From Mary W Quilts. :-))

Sharon S said...

Oh Judi, I wish I lived closer so I could come give you a hug. Your quilting is so "book worthy" . Hello, look at all the books out there! You have a style of quilting that is very inspiring & also from your heart. Self publish! This is just a "detour" on the road of life. That you want to share with all of us is incredible. A little "Toot, toot" once in awhile is what we all do(& deserve). Sign me up for the book. GO GIRL!!!!

Chelsea said...

Oh, Judi, I'm so sorry, not just for you, but for all of us who were waiting to buy your book. I can't believe how irresponsible and unprofessional the publishing company was in dragging this on so long. At least it means you're not stuck with them and you can find a better publisher who will nurture and promote you the way you were meant to be. Give it a few days then send out some emails. I bet you'll be surprised by how many houses will be excited to publish you.

Marisa said...

Wow! How disheartening! I'm so sorry this happened to you. If anything good came out of it I think it's pretty awesome to be told you are "too good"! Hold your head high!

Snippets of Carol said...

Am so sorry and hope you will look for a different publisher for the book. Many would buy it. I will be praying you will come through this and the sun will be shining on your live again. Take heart we will love to buy the book.

Self publish. I'll buy the first copy!

Maja said...

You are so "big" in the blogworld and
your work speaks for it self.
There will be other publisher that will promote your book.
Or why not publish it yourself!
Stop crying and act!!!
You can, you know!!!
Big Hug!!

This makes me so sad :(. I'm sure somehow all your hard work isn't for naught. I would definitely buy a book however it gets published!

Sherri said...

Oh my goodness Judi...I'm so sorry for you...I can't even believe how devastating this must be. I definitely think you should go to another publisher. The process should go very smoothly since all of your hard work is already complete.

Take care...you are amazing!

Kathy Schwartz said...

Don't give up on your dream just because one company said no. Once you are able to wipe away the tears and see clearly you will see that this is still the beginning of a journey and not the end.
If this is something that you really want to do then you'll find a way to make it work. I believe you can accomplish this dream so do not let this one set back crush your hope.

Melissa Corry said...

Oh Judi, I am so very sorry. That just is awful. I know your quilts are amazing and each a representation of your heart and soul. I totally think you should scout out another publisher. Maybe that companies readers are beginners but there are lots and lots of people out there that would love to do more intricate quilting. (me for one) I am so sorry. Have your cry, it is cleansing :) I feel like jumping in the car and heading down the I-15 to bring you a carton of ice cream. I will keep you in my prayers that it will all turn out good :) Lots of love!!

Vicki H. said...

Ok, Judy, crying is how I would act for a bit, too. Then take a deep breath and get all of your stuff back from them. Self publish means you have more control! Maybe that is the real message here, not that you are a sub par quilter, not that your are a bad person, not that you have neglected anyone. Follow your dreams girl! Your work is fab and you need to be confident that it is too!

Meg said...

let yourself have your cry and get on with things you do, and do so well.
you are too talented to let this hold you down.
i'm CERTAIN there are bigger things out there for you.
hugs to you

sherry said...

ok that is just devastating...so send it to another publisher...if it is that good someone will see the value in it...have you thought about self publishing the book..maybe a smaller publisher will take it on...you had the determination to do the work to begin with you will find a way around this latest set back...you go girl...up up and away..

Rafael's Mum said...

No way! What are these people at your publishers, stupid? You are my favourite quilter of everyone I have seen online and I would LOVE to have a book of yours! Please do publish, I will buy it straight away ! I can imagine you must be devastated but being 'too good' is a compliment! It just means that the market you are aiming for is not the market they are publishing for so bad match. Bad behaviour on their side too to string you along so all together, it sounds like you would fit much better with someone else or on your own!! Take heart in the fact that JK Rowling was turned down by 26 publishers before someone took on Harry Potter... I bet she was devastated 26 times over but it wasn't because of the quality of her work, just publishers who could not see a good thing when it was in front of their noses! Keep at it, I would REALLY like to read your book!!

Karen said...

I believe there's a reason for everything. Just because this door shut, don't give up. I would definitely contact another publisher. You are an amazing woman - who just also happens to be an amazing quilter. Know that we are all behind you.

God has a different plan. Just wait His plan will be perfect.

Laura said...

I agree with them that your quilting is absolutely incredible! I do not condone how they took advantage of you in the process. Know that you are an inspiration to quilters everwhere on your blog. Maybe that is all the "publishing" you are supposed to do at this time and another opportunity will come along soon.

Amy said...

(((HUGS))) Don't give up! You are such an inspiration to me with your quilting abilities! Know that when you do publish I will definitely be waiting to order!

Emily said...

Oh, Judi. I'm so sorry! I just wanted to let you know that I truly love your work, and I hope that you are able to get your book out there someday.

So sorry to hear of your difficulty--what a loss. Love these song lyric for times like this: "And yet we know in this journey of life whether in the deep valley or the mountains wild and high that all things will work for our good; to them that love the Lord."

Linda said...

I'm so sorry! I would be crying too! I've never even tried to get a book published, so I can only imagine the ups and downs of the process. How heartbreaking to have it all fall through after all that work. You're right, though, that maybe you can publish it elsewhere or yourself. Look how many times famous writers were rejected before someone finally had faith in them. AND, they had books published that had been axed by other publishers!

diane said...

I'm so sorry, Judi. What a terrible thing to go through. Such hope and excitement, only to be disappointed. Especially that they just didn't come right out and tell you. Just remember, J.K. Rowling had her Harry Potter manuscript rejected 12 times before Scholastic picked it up...and we all know how well Harry Potter did! Keep your chin up!

Polly said...

Judy, you must know in your heart that the excuses that company gave you was a total crock! They obviously are having issues, so just consider the source!! Your work is amazing...BEYOND exquisite! And we all KNOW it!! Some other company is absolutely gonna kill to publish your book!! Being as old as I am, I have learned that everything happens for the best. You might never know the truth of it all and the whys..but it will all work out! Thank you for sharing it with us! You have fans out here!! We are all right there with you!! No worries! Something great will come out of this, dear girl!! :-)

Crystal said...

I am a big fan of your work. You have inspired me to purchase a long-arm machine of my own - not even necessarily to start a business but to work creatively on my own quilting. I do not purchase many books but will honestly say that I would have purchased yours even just for the eye candy - let alone what you would have had in it instructively ;) I too believe God is in all things and that this means that something else is supposed to happen! Good luck

Laura T said...

Wow, it's so hard to believe! However if you self-publish or find another publisher I will be one of ones in line to buy the book. I'm so sorry this happened to you- but you would not want to publish with that publisher anyway after being treated the way you were. Try again with others as you have nothing to lose and more to gain! You have a great talent to share.

I know a bit what do you feel (a bit, because my quilt was supposed to be published in a mag - not a book, which is "huge" thing) and I can tell you only this: don't give up! Send it to another publisher. Don't let someone else feel you guilty that you are so good! And let yourself to cry a bit, but only a bit!

Lori said...

Our plans and His plans, sometime don't quite mesh, but.....JK Rowling was rejected many times before the Harry Potter series was published. You never know what road God is leading you toward. It's hard, but try to remember how blessed you are.

Deb said...

It's really not worth shedding tears over, you and your blog community know how really talented you are! Keep your head high and either search for another publisher or self-publish. When the time is right, it will happen!

Wendy said...

Oh my goodness! To not publish because you are a person of excellence is shameful on their part! I am so sorry that they chose not to publish your book, I for one would buy it in a heartbeat! I love your work and the time and energy you put into excellence on your projects. You could self publish your work. Try Morrison Printing, I published a book this past year with them and they were wonderful to work with and I kept all rights to my book in the process with no middle man so to speak. The book is sold directly from me and I can print more as I need them. Good luck and I hope you do publish your book soon.

Regina said...

lulu.com is just one of a number of self-publishing sites out there - and with your blog following I am sure you could sign a whole bunch of us up to help you with a promotional blog tour!!! Look at it this way -the hard part (the writing) is done - and with a lot of those self publishing places, they don't print each book until someone orders it, so you won't have a garage full of books to move!!! So so so sorry this has been a bumpy road for you - I hope this has a "greenfairytale" ending! :-)

Hi Judy,
This is a huge disappointment for sure. I do agree with your statement that perhaps the Lord is keeping you humble and quilting isn't everything. Setbacks are never fun, but i do know that God has the WHOLE ENTIRE picture and at this moment you can only see what is in front of you. What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger...(that's a statement that has been floating around in my head lately) i think this is one of those times. You will be stronger, better, and there is something beautiful in your future. Don't give up...and stay tight with your family. :)

Melissa said...

Don't fret - someone else will pick it up :) There's a market for more than just beginners!

Looking forward to seeing it in the future :)

This is either a very ignorant publisher or one who has serious management issues. It's very unprofessional how they handled your contract.

Your quilting is superb and that's the point - so you want a top notch company - one who is highly respectful of you and your quilting and understands the benefits of supporting such a quality quilter - one with a blog following. I'm sure other quilters would buy your book as they would love to master some of your techniques or just want one to admire your work. Heck - I'd pay serious money to have a hardback version. What a perfect coffee table book for a quilter.

Given the internet, blog world, it's pretty hard to be out of touch with want quilters want today and how an internet following sells books. Don't give up.. you'll find the right fit soon I'm sure.

Oh Judi, I am so sorry. I could write a few words about my thoughts about the publisher, but I won't go there :-)
Of course you can go to other publishers, a lot of authors have to send their manuscript to several before being published.
I hope they have returned (of will do so soon) all your patterns, pictures etc .
Please: chin up and don't let anyone tell you that you are too good! And if really no publisher wants it, you can always offer the patterns to some magazines. I know, it's completely different than a book, but at least your work will be seen by quilters and made , I'm sure of that.
Dutch hugs

I am so sorry. What a big disappointment after you worked so hard. I was really looking forward to reading your book and learning some of your techniques. Good luck and let me know if you do self publish and I'll help promote it on my blog.

After you've worked through your initial disappointment, be sure to submit your book to other publishers. Surely you know that it kind of works that way! So sorry to hear this news, but could you have another publisher take a look and see if they would want to publish? Or publish your self. I have a friend who published her own book. If you would like her site, just let me know. She should be able to give you some insight on publishing yourself. Hang in there and don't let this get you down. Blessings.

tirane93 said...

50 blog comments have told you to publish it yourself - send a link to these comments to all the rest of the quilt book publishers out there and tell them we all WANT to spend some money on your book. i bet you'll get another publisher who is very interested indeed. :)

Pat V. said...

I wouldn't hesitate to shop the book to other publishers. If the market target for this publisher was beginners, fine. There are other audiences out there and publishers that market to them. I agree that they strung you along in an unprofessional, or at least discourteous, manner. But one book company's opinion in no way diminishes the fact that you are an awesome, fabulous, talented quilter!

Here's a (somewhat) relevant story: After Whitney Houston passed, DD and I rented The Bodyguard with Keven Costner to watch. In the supplemental feature on the dvd, the screenwriter said his screenplay was rejected SIXTY-FIVE times before the movie was made! (In fact, the president was originally Kennedy, not Reagan, and he had Diana Ross in mind for the singer's part.) So I guess the lesson is, don't give up!

I love your work and am constantly inspired by you and your wonderful quilting. Do not let this distract from the impact you are having on alot of peoples lives. you make a difference every day! Love ya Claudia

my jaw drops every time you post a newly-quilted quilt and i, too, was looking forward to your book - i wanted to hold it in my hands and see what you do and read what you say on real paper instead of a computer screen ...... but i truly believe that Every Thing happens for a Reason and that Things Will Always Work Out - so i haven't given up on holding your book in my hands - and you shouldn't give up, either ... all that being said, embrace the Pain ... and then Let It Go, because there is Life to Live

Dana said...

I have always heard that most books get rejected by publisher after publisher and then, the RIGHT publisher comes along. If that doesn't happen on your timeline, then by all means, self-publish your book. What this publisher make not recognize is that most quilts in a book are not made, we quilters love to purchase the book for INSPIRATION AND IDEAS. Frankly, I don't ever expect to machine quilt as well as you, I mean really, you are far and away better than what I dream of. But I check your blog almost daily to see what you have been working on. I would buy your book in a heartbeat just because I know I will love looking at your beautiful quilts! DO NOT GIVE UP!

Best of luck in finding someone to publish your book!

Just because one publisher says no doesn't mean another one will, don't be disheartened you will get there in the end. Hugs

Oh no- I can't believe this! I am so sorry that you were treated so poorly by this publisher, but like everyone else here has said- DON'T give up- there must be someone else who will recognize the beauty and uniqueness of your work and what a gift it is to the quilting world. I actually think you could do two books- one a technique book so we could try to learn some of your wonderful stuff, and another coffee table book of your beautiful quilts! I would buy both in a heartbeat- hang in there and enjoy some kiddie time, that always helps:)

My two cents - the publisher just made a major mistake! Of course there are beginning quilters, but even the brand new ones are striving for excellence and want to see how others have achieved that. What I don't want to see, and will always pass by, is something that was slapped together just to get it done quick and make a profit. You don't want that kind of publisher and we don't want that kind of book! As others have said, please don't give up, find another publisher or look into self-publishing, and check out Leah Day's site as others have suggested. She just came out with her 365 design book that was done through Amazon but she self-published her first two books. Hold your head up and look toward tomorrow - your work is gorgeous!

I wish that publisher knew how much we wish for a publication by Judi Madsen! Do it anyway....it's really their loss.

BUT Kindle will do it for free. So He will do his there for now, via Amazon.com. You could/should try that too. Or even offer a PDF version on Etsy for sale. I would love to be able to purchase your book. My problem is that I find most books too basic. I would love a more advanced book to work form.

Good Luck!!

Yes, definitely try another publisher. That was very unprofessional of them and I think most companies would never handle it that way. It was bad on their part. YOU should not feel bad or feel that you were wrong in any way. Just keep trying and somebody will pick it up. Show those other companies that you are open to their suggestions and can tweak or add to any of the projects that you are showing. Let it be a jumping off point and maybe someone will love it "as is" but if they need you to simplify some of your quilting ideas then be open to that too. Good luck! You are awesome.

And I don't have a book. Mainly because I am a slacker. But who knows? It may never happen for me. I can't imagine that I would have anything exciting to share anyways :)

Good luck.

Judi, so sorry you're feeling sad about your book not being published. But as you say maybe it's not happening now so that something better can happen in the future. God knows you love your husband and family but he also knows you love quilting and that it's part of your life that brings you great joy. Believe that what you want for yourself is what God wants for you also. Take care and never stop trying to be the best at what you do- those talents are God given.

Oh, Jodi, I am sorry that you had this experience! In other fields, books are submitted, rejected, submitted, rejected etc until the book finds its right "home." You have done all of the work already, so why not make it available to another publishing company and see what happens? Perhaps the first company was just not the right "home" for your book; perhaps you were the victim of inner-company politics of some sort (especially since your editor is gone). Good luck!

Especially since you and your family suffered through the creative process. Your work is awesome, you deserve a book!

Good luck, I hope you go ahead on your own, screw the publishers! Once your ebook takes off they'll be begging you! ;D

you are an excellent quilter, the publisher did not handle this right and it should never gotten to the point that it did. Try again - also did you aim your book at beginners? you are far from a beginner and your quilting is certainly way above a beginner so a beginner might not be in line for your book. Was it a book on quilting or piecing - your piecing is something beginners can do but your quilting is way above!
Keep in mind that not everyone in the quilting world has a book published but if you want one then you must try again.

Submit it to another publishing company! Simple as that!
Find a local publishing company in your area or self-publish.
Odd that it took so long for them to finally tell you, though.
Take your day and then move on.
Good Luck!

Your quilting is the best I have seen ever, anywhere, in the entire world, so please don't drop your standards for the sake of a publisher. I hope that a good publisher will print your amazing work and then we can all queue up and buy it!

I want to be almost THAT good someday and a book by you would help me get there, right? I really want to write someone. Got an email address or post address?

Please do not let this get you down, there seems to be a rampant amount of easy and quick projects being pumped out in the quilting world at the moment and I wholeheartedly believe that it is essential that those that have the talent must continue to raise the bar. You are talented I have seen your work in shows and followed your blog for some time and love it. Put your book out to everyone available and if that doesn't work self publish and it will sell I guarantee there are a lot of quilters that will buy a book that raises the bar.Karen McTavish told me a story once about her first book and she struggled now I guarantee there are always lineups to buy her books at all her classes. Your publisher is a fool and you have earned the right to your tears as they should be ashamed of their behavior but their loss will be someone else's prosperity. Promise me you will take this advise to heart as I know your talent should be applauded and this will be one hurdle that will only make you stronger.

I'm really sorry you were treated this way and I can totally make an educated guess at the publisher :-( Self publishing is a really, really, huge job and really I would say shop it around to a couple other publishers first. One I would suggest is AQS - they published Diane Gaudynski's book and she quilts as well as you and the book did very well. I've also heard really good things from quilt designers about working with Kansas City Star Quilts - that they treat their authors very well. If you do decide to self publish, drop a note to Kay Mackenzie - she has had great experience with that is and is awesome about sharing.

So sorry to hear about your deal falling through, you are such an amazing talented quilter! I think you should probably direct that publisher or future publishers to humblequilts blog where there was a discussion going on to why readers are giving up their magazine subscriptions. Basically it is because there is nothing new or inspiring, and for me it would be "too simple". It seems there is a push to "simplify" and cater to beginner quilters but there is a huge market for intermediate to advanced quilters as well. 169 comments already, there's at least 169 potential customers for them, plus all the people who didn't comment but thought it! i learned something really important when i was learning how to draw (my mother is an artist): you learn from the masters. you learn by imitating the masters. and eventually, you gain the skill of the masters. nobody says, look at this mediocre piece of artwork, don't you aspire to be like that? no! no one does that!! even in the complexity of your designs, there are simple fillers that a beginner could learn and use. and the quilter can grow with your patterns, because with each pattern they conquer, there is a new one to discover in your quilts. there's no, "now i'm done, i guess i can't learn anymore" after mediocrity is achieved. take a breath, eat some ice cream, and maybe try again with another publisher. boo on them.

Judi,

I would buy your book in a heartbeat and have it front and center everyday as inspiration and reference. Tell the next publisher, (and there will be one)that there are still many quilters out there who find great joy in doing their best for God and their country with the gifts they have been given. We are not setting the standard or comparing ourselves to others, but simply enjoying the process and the results of our heart's work. Don't give up!

What a huge dissapointment! Do not give up! Surely there is a market for a more advanced quilting book. Take a breath, grieve the loss, but don't give up. Research for another publishing company that has an advanced audiance and try again. I see lots of comments on Amazon for readers looking for more advanced projects. Never give up...when one door closes another door opens. Trust God's timing.

For those of us "more experienced" quilters (and there are hundreds of thousands of us), I must shout that your former 'publisher' is insulting ALL quilters, including the newbies. Obviously they were embarrassed by their own ineptitude and this is the best excuse they could come up with - and it was pulled from a dark place. Approach other publishers - there are lots of them out there and they are publishing quilting books every day. You have a built-in audience base and will be successful in the long run - and also find GOOD publishers. I know you're upset - I would be, too - but I suspect that a year from now you'll be happily published. (and too bad you won't tell us who the lousy publisher is - I spend a lot of money on books and I'd be happy not to give that publisher any more)

Such great response here showing support for purchasing your book. Please check into the self publication, perhaps contacting Gwen Marston or Gregory Case would give you some insight into the self publishing options and available services. Maybe once you are ready to self publish you could do a pre-sale and have a good idea of how many books to print. I hope you will follow your dream.

I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you. My mother was an author and had a lot of books published and I know how fickle the industry can be. I'll share some of my insights with you.

The original editor leaving the company was the first sign that things were going badly. Your book was likely her choice and her project and the editor who replaced her has her own "favorites" and your book was literally orphaned at the publishing company with no champion. Even if they did publish it, it probably wouldn't have received its fair share of the marketing budget.

After you dry your eyes, take a look at your contract with the publisher and see if there is a "kill fee" that you are owed if they drop the book. (If you didn't have a contract... take it as a "lessons learned" and don't go forward with another publisher until you have a signed contract). Make sure they make good on any kill fees or other money owed to you.

Now that you have a finished book, you are in very good shape to find another publisher if you want. You also could try to get an agent to do all the haggling with publishers for you, so you can spend your time quilting and writing. You may also want to try to find the original editor and see if she is still interested in doing your book at her new publishing house.

Best wishes.

My heart sunk after reading your blog today, Publishers are ?ing why sales are down. They need to wake up...many of us are simple tired of seeing the same thing in books and magazines, I truly believe you have a best seller waiting to be published, why? Because you put your heart and soul into your work and it shows, quilters love it, we want to see, we want to study it, we want to dream about the prospect of someday being able to quilt like you. Please march forward because what you do and how you do it will sell books, lots of books. A self-published book just may be to your advanatage in the long run, why give the icying on the cake to publishers who's only interest is making money. Judy, I'm waiting for my copy of your best seller!!!

Your would be a book I would buy! I've loved everything you created, and I am always thrilled to see your next quilt and design. I've learned so much from looking at your work, and trying to see through your eyes what design 'belongs' to a quilt! There must be a publisher out there somewhere that appreciates and wants to promote fine work. Don't give up! You've already done the work.....now it's just a matter of finding someone who 'gets it!'

Deb said...

If you publish it, they (including me) will buy it.

Aw, Judi, publishing is a tough business these days. Don't think of it as an axed project, though, and don't take it personally! There are LOTS of other publishing houses that would be thrilled to put your book out there--don't be discouraged. You might also consider epublishing through Amazon--could get you some bucks and land you a better deal! Chin up, sister!

Please don't give up on your dream! When 1 door closes, another opens & I do believe your work is VERY worthy of a book deal. Maybe just not with this particular publisher, but there are many more out there. Seek another- you deserve it!!

Hope your tears from yesterday are long gone and you are seeing what happened in a way that opens you up to endless opportunities!

Celebrate today with quilting - it's what you are so good at.

Oh, man! What a disappointment! But please don't give up on the book. I for one want a copy of it! I'm sure another publisher would feel differently. Maybe that company is having other problems and that's why the editor left and your book is caught in that fray. I've heard you do a lot better financially by self publishing and I know Joen Wolfram in involved in helping self publish. Maybe that is an avenue to pursue? Anyway, wipe your tears off and get busy and get that book published so that we can have it!!

Oh Judi, I sure hope that all the comments I've been reading are of some comfort to you. Of all the blogs I read, I find myself saving so many of your feeds, because I hope someday to practice what you are doing. I love your work, and I'm so looking forward to having a copy whenever it is published...but I hope it's soon! I have seen so many ideas from so many of the comments, I'm sure there is a way.

How heartbreaking! Chin-up! You do AWESOME work! You're one of my favorite machine quilters, and I always look forward to reading about (and okay, ogling) your work. You've actually given me courage to try new and more advanced quilting designs on my own quilts, and I'm definitely still a seasoned beginner on a good day.

Hi Judi, I don't often comment but just wanted to say that your work is fabulous, you are a talent and you should never NOT do your best. When the timing is right you will be published and with a publishing house with a lot more professionalism in handling a new author! So often we can't see God's hand until a ways down the road. You have every right to feel disappointed and sad.
Sending you a big hug and a whispered prayer to ease the hurt.
in quilting friendship,
Diane

Judi, I would love to have your book. You have been so inspiring to me. Your work is so wonderful, I am checking it out all the time. I have been Longarming about 1 1/2 yrs and can only hope to be 1/2 as talented as you. I know another publisher will jump on the chance to do your book and I'll be first in line for it.

You are a beautiful quilter but that's not the reason they rejected your book, it's an excuse. I will keep you in my prayers and yes your book will be published and we all will buy it.

I'm sorry you have had this trouble, but I am wondering...surely you did not write a book for them without having a written contract?

Denise said...

I'm going to agree with everyone else here and say that you will get that book published...there are other publishers out there who will honor contracts and recognize talent. You should hold your head high...you're amazing!!!

Dear Judi,

Gosh, your post is so upsetting on so many levels. First, your quilting is absolutely lovely and you clearly have lots of skill and inspiration to share, so please don't let this disappointment allow you to throw away your dream of a book. Second, reassure yourself that there are many ways to get your book out there. I'd pitch it to a different publisher or I'd self-publish. You've already done the hardest part of the job, so the next part will be much easier. I've self published 2 books and would be glad to tell you everything I've learned. Shame on that publisher for behaving so poorly...but you can turn these lemons into lemonade!

I am sort of a lurker on your blog and don't comment much. It's in part, because I'm so overwhelmed by how awesome your quilting is. But that would not stop me from buying your book. I think there is a place in the market for books on more advanced techniques. There is a lot of beginner and simple stuff out there. More challenging would be a nice niche.

It's so unprofessional what this publishing company did to you. I'm so sorry you had to do that.

I say go to other publishers or self-publish. There are lots of people who would love to read your book!
