Sparkle Tree Skirt

1
Holy Cow!  I love this.  I have been sharing a few sneaks of this quilt on Instagram (@judiakagreenfairy) for the past week and a half, but I'm so happy to share the whole quilt top with you now. This tree skirt is called Sparkle Tree Skirt designed by the talented Sarah Vedeler.
Laura pieced and embroidered the top, she did a beautiful job.  Laura is the owner of The Quilt Crossing in Boise, ID - so be sure to visit her if you are in the area, tell her I sent you!  This tree skirt will be a class during summer 2014, so contact Laura for more info if you would like to be a part of this awesome top.  The original tree skirt is split and has a hole in the center for the tree, but Laura will be using this for her circular table.  I am sure it will be just gorgeous.  In all reality, I wish it were mine ;-)

2
So yes, this tree skirt is made with dupioni silk - I love this stuff, it quilted up beautifully. I used Kimono Silk thread by Superior threads to quilt it up.  Have I told you I love that thread?  Well, I do!  It's amazing.
So the goal for the circular center of the quilt was to have it move, the diagonal lines are all the same angle, but don't ask me what the degree is because I basically drew one out, then copied it to the rest of the tree blocks.

3
I think the purple and turquoise are so beautiful together.  Sarah's appliques are incredible and just perfect.

6
I wanted to have a design between each small edge block, the square/diamond motif is what I came up with.  I think it looks great.

7
The center circle is fun.  Just straight lines with a pie shape piece in between.  The texture is just awesome.

8
This quarter feather swirl is so fun to quilt up.  I think I should probably do a tutorial on that one, what do you think?

9
I had four background fillers for the tree skirt.  It worked out so there was an even amount of each.

This is the first one.

10
Second one.

11
Third one.

12
Fourth one.

13
I like how I quilted the dividing fabrics between the large trees.  So fun.

14
The back!  Isn't it gorgeous?  I need to get my own silk to make something for me.

15

16
Well, this is my last finish for 2013.  I hope to get a lot more finished for 2014 and I can not wait to share it all with you.

Super beautiful! I have some of Sarah's designs (on my list for 2014). I do have a little pile of silk that I've been saving. Not sure on a tree skirt, but I'm thinking a purse of some sort. Love the quarter feather motif.

Yes please can't get enough of your tuts. BTW I received your book all the way Down Under just before Christmas. Haven't had time to wear the print off the pages yet but it has moved to the top of the list as my favorite quilting book.

That is simply magnificent! God has truly gifted you with some mad quilting skills! ;-) I can't decide which side is more beautiful. I have some lovely silk from my prior days as a seamstress and would love to make something so beautiful like that (and have you quilt it!) I was wondering, is your embroidery dense so it is making the applique book as if it is trapunto, or is it trupunto? Is the applique fused or needle turned, if you don't mind my asking? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and thank you for sharing your art with us!

This is so wonderful! I have looked at the embroidery package from Sarah Vedeler several times and think it is time for me to go ahead and purchase it. This is so inspiring! I love it done in dupioni silk and my local shop carries it. Your beautiful quilting is the perfect final touch.

Amazing, Judi! I love the quilt design, but your quilting takes it over the top. I would also like to see a tutorial for that feather design…

And I got your book for Christmas, too - I can't wait to load up one of my own quilts on my frame and give some of these quilting ideas a try! And I've already got one of your projects from the book on my to-do list for 2014...

I Love that piece...and you just did such a wonderful job. I really have to try that silk thread with my longarm. I have just used it for hand applique...
No reason not to, I have a wholesale account :)

Sandy said...

Another idea...you could use those gorgeous shot cottons for the skirt too. They would look just as fabulous as the silk!

Your quilting work is outstanding. Please do videos/tutorials so that we can TRY to do a fraction as well as you do!!! I LOVE how you take a blank space and make it into a beautiful motif of it's own. You are unbelievable. Would that I could quilt like you.

Johanna said...

Once again, outstanding! I just got my longarm for Christmas. I have a long way to go! I know that I will get better with each project, I need to learn to be patient. Maybe that should be my theme/goal for 2014. Patience.
