Okay, so I live in a desert playground. This area, Snow Canyon is just 20 minutes away from me. I decided I wanted to try the red rock backdrop for my newest quilt design. I am always so happy when I take the time to visit the incredible places around me.
Anyway, I give you - Just Call Me Modern? This is an original quilt design by me. I thought it would be fun to play on the whole "Modern" quilting thing. People have asked me what my quilting style is and I am not sure what category you would put me in. I love traditional piecing and I always will, but I love to add my own style to it. Isn't the backdrop just gorgeous?
I finished this quilt a few months ago, minus the binding. The plan was to save it for my second book idea, but really - I have been too impatient for that and realized it would be way more fun to come up with new ideas and release this pattern now.
The quilting was time intensive, but oh so worth it. The best part? It's all mine. I can not tell you how happy I am to have my own quilt exactly like I planned it and to keep it is even better.
Every block in this quilt was given its own special quilting treatment.
So the four-triangle squares in the middle of the quilt? Love.
I had so much fun taking pictures with my sister today - this picture is one she took and I absolutely love it. We only had one issue of the quilt being blown off the rock because of wind. But, thankfully it did not get too dirty.
I love the colors in the quilt and the red rocks are such a compliment to the quilt.
Love.
So the quilting on this quilt took me over 35 hours.
You can see why here. Best part of this pattern, as a bonus I will also be including the instructions on how to quilt this super cute square motif that is bouncing around in the quilt.
Here's what the whole quilt looks like. I just love it!
Quilting texture that makes my heart sing. Seriously, have I told you I love what I do?
I love the frame I created for the above block.
So, what do you think? Do you like how I continued the quilting as if the white strip with squares was not even there?
I still love it. I don't think I will get tired of looking at this quilt, ever!
So, I give you Just Call Me Modern? I am so happy with it. I hope you are too. I have it available as a pattern on my website for pre-order now. I will be shipping the paper patterns out around November 25 and that is when the PDF patterns will be available as well.
Thanks for letting me share this with you!

What an amazing design. Beautiful fabrics, colors, free-motion quilting. And, of course, I love the photo staging shots. Great job. I think this is going to be a very popular pattern. Love it.

Wow, that's really gorgeous, Judi! I like the quilt pattern itself, but the additional textures of your quilting are just fabulous. Very nice!

I just kept jumping from one square to another with my mouth open! What a fabulous quilt! Your quilting is amazing! I just want to keep looking at it and figure out how you did that! Wow!
I would be worried about that red dirt too! My shoes will never be white again. Love the quilt! Needless to say, the quilting, oh my goodness. You have patience!
Words cannot describe the beauty of this quilt. The pattern is wonderful, but the quilting is jaw dropping gorgeous!
Every single quilt you do just blows me away. :D This is particularly fun. I love Quilt Interrupted thing it's got going with that white diagonal splice. Perfect colors for your region, too!!
cool pattern!! Fun, fresh & funky!
love the quilting too.
I'm still trying to decide what I like best - the pattern, the colors, your quilting, or the backdrop! Spectacular all together!
Really beautiful. It was well worth your time.

This is amazing! I am almost speechless seeing your fabulous creation. Very modern!
wow Wonderfull color and the quilting :-)
Another wonderful job! Love it. Barbara
Beautiful quilt and quilting setting for photos isn't bad either
I am going to try it in batiks! Some of the parts look tricky, others more basic. So--looks like I'll learn a few new moves when I give it a try. Perfect. The quilter I send my things to will have a grand time working her magic.
Every single quilt you quilt is fabulous, but you have outdone yourself on this one. That's why you love what you do, it's your talent. And I'd love to live where you do, the scenery is simply majestic. Thank you for sharing your quilts!

Beautiful pattern, made even more stunning by your quilting! :)
You are amazing! You are pushing the envelope of quilting design and moving the quilt world, and quilters, into the future. Incredible designs!
That quilt is just gorgeous and looks great with the red dirt mountain. Love the design and quilting!
Wow Judi! I say the photo shoot was a great success! The backdrop is perfect with the colors and the definition of the quilting... The quilt is just stunning and e quilting takes it over the top. I can see why you would want to look at it all day! Thanks so much for all of the fine pictures and congratulations on a unique and beautiful pattern!
The quilting is killer! :-)) love the aqua and chocolate brown together. Good job!
The colors are wonderful - I love the bold, warm look to it. The only problem is if I were to make the quilt, I'd want the quilting like this, too! Which would be quite impossible - you do an amazing job.
Wonderful quilt and backdrop!
Amazing quilt Judi and the location for photos really is a stand out. Not sure I could have put that quilt with white down on that red dirt though? I love this pattern but like the photos not sure I could take a rotary cutter and slice up the top. And the quilting is amazing. Thanks for sharing.
This is an outstanding quilt!! Wow, beautiful!!! The quilting sings perfectly with the piecing. I was just up in your neck of the dessert, a beautiful place indeed.
Have a great day.
Always, Queenie
Judi, I've only just joined your community here - what a brilliant sense of timing I have eh! This quilt is just fabulous and the quilting part of it is something I can only aspire to - mind you, I always was quite aspirational :-D
I look forward to drowning in even more fabulousness in the future. Meanwhile I have a book and a pattern to pre-order.

Absolutely amazing!
It's absolutely gorgeous and the quilting is amazing! Love it!!
Oh my gosh, Judi. I don't know how you do it! Gorgeous quilting on this. A God given talent for sure! Can't wait for the pattern.
My first thought…Holy cow, I can't believe she's putting that quilt on the red sand :).
Wow!!!! I don't even know what else to say. As always your quilting is phenomenal, but the quilt design is absolutely fabulous as well. I'll be one of your pre-orders (as soon as I'm done writing this). Love, love, love this. And, thank you for posting so many pictures! Seriously inspiring!
Carrie
I am blown away by your quilting talents! And I fantasize about the day I might make a quilt worthy of your quilting skills :)
You are an artist and an inspiration to me when I sit down to quilt on my Sweet 16!
What a wonderful quilt design!! I love the fabric choices and the quilting is outstanding.
Your quilting is so beautiful and so inspirational that I can spend hours just drooling over your photos. This one may be your most beautiful one yet! Congratulations on a job done superbly and I hope you sell millions of patterns!
The pattern is fantastic, your quilting is fantastic and I am happy to say I will be taking a quilting class of yours in February at the AQS show in Phoenix! Can't wait! Oh and I don't even own a long arm ! You are so very talented. Hope your new book is available soon. I pre ordered a copy. Thanks for sharing!
I love that quilting!!! How amazing you are. I don't know that I would have the patience to do that much detail work, currently, but I love to think that sometime in my future I would be able to devote that much time to quilting. Thank you for sharing such an amazing inspiration piece.
Every time you show a quilt I am simply amazed at the quilting, but I really adore the piecing in this quilt. Really great. Love the quilting "behind' the hourglass blocks.
Your talent is truly amazing. You are an inspiration .
As always your work is awesome! But it really does look spectacular in that setting, thanks for sharing all of it!
Love the pattern and of course your quilting has taken it "over the top" You must have had so much fun with your sister taking those pictures. They simply make the quilt shine.
Dear Judy
Hope you enter this one in a quilt competition. It is a excellent example to explain negative space, which I showed my son, as he is doing negative space in photography at school. When it is is not quilted, it is flat where the white is, but the energy is created with the quilting and trapunto (raised effects).
Keep up the inspiration.
Beautiful... I love it to.
Love it Judi! Curious. How many hours did it take you to do this? You are my hero. Wish I had half as much creativity and talent as you do. Quilt is wonderful and the quilting puts it over the top.
Your quilts are always amazing, but this is one of my favorite ones EVER. The quilting is amazing, but I just love the quilt pattern itself. Love it!
Wow, truly wonderful! Love love love the quilt pattern, full of movement and interest...and as usual, the quilting puts it over the top. I love the way you quilt over adjoining pieces, it makes the quilting as important as the piecing...I envy the beautiful place you live in, so much sunshine and such gorgeous places to explore!
So, so beautiful! The pattern is awesome, i love the little squares on the white background, but i must tell you that i would give a great deal of money to be able to quilt like you do. Your a quilting Goddess!
Absolutely beautiful!! The quilting you did is perfect!
Love your creativity! Awesome colors, pattern and quilting!
Well, of course it's gorgeous, if YOU made it! :-) What most blew me away was your bravery, faith in angels, or whatever it was that enabled you to take that magnificent WHITE background quilt with so many hours of work in it and lay it in what looks like RED CLAY EARTH?! I am glad it didn't get dirty, or blown away, or carried off by a bald eagle or something crazy like that. It's beautiful, Judi!
Absolutely gorgeous quilt!! I can't stop looking at it! And the backdrop is just perfect for it! Love, love, love your quilting!
This is just amazing- such beautiful textures happening with the richness of your quilting! As a relative novice to machine quilting, this is inspirational stuff. I can see why you would never get sick of looking at- there is so much to see!
Absolutely Amazing!!! The quilting is just phenomenal and I love the pattern!
Wow! this is gorgeous, both the quilt and quilting!
Oh my goodness what a gorgeous quilt!! LOVE the pattern, but your quilting is simply stunning! Absolutely beautiful!!
The quilt design is beautiful and your quilting is out of this world!
WOW!!! What an amazing pattern and wonderful quilting. I'm always in awe at the dimension your quilting adds to the quilts, it brings a whole new look to them. You are so talented! What fabric line did you use to complete this quilt? I love the rich colors of the fabrics, especially when they are set-off by the white. Thanks for sharing!
Another knocked it out of the ballpark home run quilt!!!
simply beautiful.
Oh my goodness, this is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Your artistry with fabric and thread is amazing. I just don't have enough words for this one, LOVE it!
You have such a gift to 'see' where you are going with the quilting. Love your photos. Love your commentary. Love that you love what you're doing! Wish I could send you every one of my quilts for the quilting, but that doesn't seem realistic! Awesome.
Thanks for a awesome post. Hope for the next one

How beautiful, I would not get tired of looking at it either. Congratulations on your talent.
This is your most beautiful quilt yet Judi. I see so much of the Southwest in it. It was an inspiration to display it in Snow Canyon State Park.
WOW!!! It's gorgeous and you get to keep it...awesome!! You are amazing...so talented and brave to lay your masterpiece on that red 'dirt'. LOVE IT!!!! Happy stitching, Pauline
Wow. Your quilt designs in the border and in all the squares and the great photos - absolutely gorgeous!
This is one pattern that I think will look good even without your quilting, even though I really love what you did with it. I think I'll give it a try! Great job all around, the design and the workmanship.
Oh my gosh! I've been admiring the snippets of this quilt that I've seen on Pinterest for weeks now. What a treat to get to see the entire quilt. Good job!

Just incredible Judi! You are so talented!
What a vibrant quilt and fabulous backdrop too. 35 Hours to quilt - it would take me that long to add simple straight lines! I've just discovered your website and blog and am truly in awe of your talent.
