Content vs Covet - oh and a giveaway!

***update*** giveaway closed.
 before
Okay, so this is my bed before. I wanted to share this with you because I love it. My mom made this quilt and the pillows for me and I have loved them for two years now.  But, every now and again a change is in need.  I'll explain.  I have spent the last couple months stressing over a few things, mostly quilting and designing and all the hopes and dreams that come with this job.  Also, add teaching into the mix for next year and I find that I have been a little stressed because of the planning I have to do now.

So, what do I do?  I stalk Instagram, Facebook and blogs (all things quilty) out there and I become a little obsessed - maybe too much.  I find myself taking on more projects, I amp up my goals and I drive myself crazy trying to accomplish more than I need to. And, then I make a critical mistake.  I start comparing myself to others.  Which of course leads to coveting.  Pretty sure I know why one of the ten commandments is "Thou shalt not covet."  It really is so dangerous because you start to be unhappy with what you have.  Tell me you do this too and that I am not the only one that has fallen into the trap of discontentment.  So, I pull back - thank heavens for family who are patient and can help me realize the source of all my crazy.

after
So, I went to the store.  Bound and determined to have a "trendy" new bed spread - colors and all, but you know what I found out?  I went with the colors I love.  I am drawn to earthy colors and I always have been.  The white fluffy bedspread I wanted became cream, flat and quilted - the turquoise pillows became green.  Instead of changing out my rusty orange drapes, I got pillows to compliment them. It was a change that I needed for the moment, but I realized I wanted the colors I love, not what Pinterest shows me are "in."

closeup
That is when I realized that the last couple months of comparing myself to others has made me so unhappy.  We are all so different and thank heavens for that.  We don't have to love the same things and have the same colors in our houses.  It is funny how Social Networking is so awesome, yet - it can make you jealous of everyone else.  So, I have decided that I will stop it!  I will cut back on the time I spend on Social Networks (it was bad, darn smart phone) and I will realize that what I have is all I need.  I will stay true to myself and what I love and not worry about others who seem to be accomplishing so much more than me.

So, that means I am back on my schedule.  I got off it and boy, that always gets me in a bind.  It has changed a bit, but I am completely mom in the morning.  I even started exercising today.  I think I need that. Since I will have three kids in school, and one that naps - I will only work 3 hours in the afternoon during nap time and one hour after bedtime.  4 hours - that is it.  Oh, and that means more time in the evening with Clint, so happy about that.

So, if you find yourself being unhappy with what you have - take a step back, or a break from comparing and realize that each one of us has different talents, abilities and we are all amazing in our own way.  I really believe that, I just sometimes lose sight of it.  So, thanks for letting me get that off my chest.  It really helps to talk about it.  Anyway - to thank you for reading, especially this long post - I would like to give away a beautiful fat quarter bundle to one of you.

giveaway
Sunnyside by Kate Spain for Moda.  It is beautiful.  It is one of the new lines we have in the shop and I can not think of anything more fun than cutting into this line and making beautiful quilt tops.  I want one of you to be able to do just that.

Sunnyside
Oh, and the new camera - totally awesome.  Still learning, but can you see how amazing having a "close up" setting is? I love playing with my camera and hope to be really good someday. All in good time.

So, two chances to win.  Tell me your favorite new line in our shop, then tell me how you stay content and happy in your own home.

Thanks everyone!  Good luck.

Wow. Sunnyside and Honeysweet are both appealing to me.

I regain feelings of contentment by enjoying nature. I'm so thankful for the natural beauty around us. It makes me realize that I don't 'need' anything.

Your room is lovely, both ways. I like to switch out my quilts often for a new look. Loved your post and glad you found your way back to contentment. Hard to choose between your new fabrics but I think Joy Batiks would win me over since I love red so much. Have a great day!

Giggles is my favorite of the new lines! I just found out I am going to be a grandmother for the first time, and my daughter is convinced she is having a girl, so that fabric would be fun for a girly quilt!

I think we have all fallen into the pit of discontentment at some point in our lives. It's so good that you realized it, and the cause of it, and pulled yourself out of it instead of getting sucked deeper in! I try to stay content and happy in my home by realizing just how very blessed I am with my family, home and security, and I try to do things for others as often as possible which is a great way to get out of yourself and be thankful for the gifts God has given to you. Great post, Judi. Lots to think about!

I live alone, and spend my time quilting . . . for children and the elderly. Quilting brings me a great amount of peace, and I believe the quilts bring love and security to the recipients. To me, quilting is simply a labor of love . . . for the quilter as well as those who receive the quilts. Honeysweet is such a lovely new pattern . . . I can definitely see some of this fabric in my future!!!

Josephine FQ Bundle by French General - that French General line is just gorgeous. I try not to covet, but sometimes you do get caught up in it all. I thinks it's a normal part of human nature. If it wasn't, there would be no need for that commandment!

I like the sherberty pastels in Giggles. Mixed with some black & white to male it pop.

Sweetheart, you are definitely not alone. It took me some time to tune out to what other people and websites were doing....I listen to what I know is right for me and leave the rest up to Spirit. While I'm not the biggest and the best....I am me and I'm doin' my thing and I'm happiest when I 'm doin' that.

Your gifts are evident and you will and DO have all you need....keep lookin' inward...you'll know what is right for you and that will make you the happiest.

Love your posts, your vulnerability and honesty....I wish you all the blessings you wish for yourself and your beautiful family.

Think your bedroom colors are lovely! Nice job! And I my favorite new line is that Collection for a Cause - Love. It's gorgeous.....but all of those collections have been right up my alley! :o) And I think I stay content with my home because we are in the process of restoring it....so as we finish another room, it's like I'm loving my home all over again! :o)

I fully understand what you have gone through and I think we all have at one time or another. It's so easy to get swallowed up in 'coveting' what someone else is blessed with and yet if we asked those same people they would probably have their own longings. I read through blogs and am envious of the size of houses in America, I'd love a basement where I could have a laundry room and the chance to have a much larger and more organised seing room. Then I realise I'd have to spend more time cleaning that bigger house and less time sewing lol.
We have our home, its bought and fully paid for, we have our bolt hole 5 mins walk from the beach and I love it here, I think of wat I'm blessed with and contentment snuggles me within its arms once more.
I love so many of your lines but I have to say Honey Sweet is my absolute favourite, its warm, happy and makes me smile.

Being content - well after the third move in 12 years I am tired of moving STUFF and especially stuff that I 'needed' and never even used at all or much. That puts things in perspective. The other thing - I have gotten to be a stay at home mom and wife (now that my kids are out of the house) and I don't want to jeopardize that by wasting our money that my husband has worked hard to earn.

I like to look at 'stuff' online as much as the next gal but I either know I will never have it or I decide we can make it. :D

Pamela said...

I really appreciated your post. Yes, we do need to be true to ourselves. I try to stay content in my home by eliminating clutter whenever I can. It's not always easy with four people and all their stuff in the house. But uncluttered rooms and surfaces make me feel like there is room to breathe, to think, and to play. So any day that I can fill some boxes for the Goodwill or take out a big bag of trash is a good day. The exception, of course, is fabric! That I never have enough of. :) My current favorite is Lush Uptown.

I remind myself to be content by spending time with my husband and my three boys. It's hard to wish for things I don't have when I am having fun with the amazing family I do have. Thanks for sharing your heart. I think we've all had times when we spent too much time looking at others and losing our 'happy' in the process.

Beautiful post! I try to keep things simple. I assign myself one extra cleaning job each day to do during nap time (for example, Monday is mop day, Tuesday is laundry day) and then I use the rest of the time to catch up on blogs or sew. The less time I spend online, the more time I get for creating!

Dear Judy,

For a very long time I allowed others to trample all over me, use me as their doormat, then one day, a close relative made a comment about our youngest child with autism. Fix his problem before we want any more contact with him. He cannot help for what he got, I was very hurt. That was the moment when I said, no more. Accept us just the way we are, I was taught unconditional love by my parents, especially my late Mom. It has been more than 16 years, we are comfortable in our skins, my son has blossomed. As for those who could not love him the way he is, they are a non existent part of our lives, all their own doing. They are poorer for it. As for the new line from the shop, it has to be Josephine, because of my French Hugenot ancestry. Thank you for allowing your talent to shine, your quilting is art, it blesses all of us who is fortunate to see it at Green Fairy Quilts.

I remember an aha moment many years ago. I was nursing my 2nd baby while watching the soaps and I realized that they were controlling my days. Not only that but I was getting sucked into their lives and they never were able to solve anything. And they were making me depressed. So I stopped watching. When I start to go overboard with any passive activity (blogs, facebook, radio talkshow hosts, news commentators, pinterest, whatever,)I remember that soap moment, and pull back because it isn't real. My life is real, my family and their activities are real, face to face people are real. My life will still be wonderful if I don't have everything in this year's color, I don't even like emerald. Besides everything cycles and it may fit you better on the next go round.
I'm glad you have discovered yourself again because what you do is amazing. Many of us compare ourselfs to you, you know. We could become severely depressed about that!

Tami C said...

Honeysweet would have to be my favorite of your newest arrivals. I stay content in my home by being able to spend all the time I want sewing and dreaming about sewing.

Meredith said...

Love Honeysweet, but Sunnyside and Josephine are also gorgeous...so hard to choose a favorite. The simple things are what keep me happy at home, a cup of tea in the garden, a cat on my lap, and time with family. Thanks for the chance to win!

I just fell in love with High Street! Would love to win the fat quarters to make my sweet daughter a new quilt for her new dorm room...

I keep content by limiting outside influence such a social medias etc...also I always take a look at all the beauty in the quilts, wall hangings, afghans and pillows that I have made for my home...at the end of the day I know that it was my hand that stitched each and every item with love for my family...its nice to occasionally splurge for that one trendy item you really want, but for the most part I find great joy in what I have accomplished with my own hands.

I tend to rearrange things in my house every few weeks. Maybe just a few things - like what I may have on a table or the mantle, but it gives the room a fresh look. If I really like the way it looks I might leave it a little longer.

And fabric - gosh so hard to pick, but it would probably be Josephine by FG, although I've got my eye on Sunnyside too (among a few others)!

Julie said...

Usually when I find I "want" something that is in, by the time I can afford to get it, I don't want it anymore. I actually do that with fabric....I make a list of what I want and then a few weeks later will go over the list and find I really don't want most of what is on there.

I stay content by getting out for a walk with my little family. Tonight we went to explore our new neighbourhood. We are rural now having just moved over the weekend. There are horses in a field at the end of our street and we went to visit them. A couple came over for pets from us. It was a very nice time. :)

Laura T said...

Wow such amazing comments. I understand what you said about coveting. I got off Facebook, Pinterest, etc... for about 2 weeks and that helped. Got back on because family seems to post to Facebook and miss seeing photos of kids etc and that sees to be the only way to keep up. I was getting too caught up in some of the quilting Facebook friends and comparing my self and time to them and it was too self-defeating. Taking the break helped and then just realizing everyone has different talents and time so I just need to be happy with what is going on now and being present in my time. It's important to stay true to yourself and your family and you will be fine:-)

If I'm having a bad day and can't see it, then I'll try to be that blessing in someone else's life, such as going through the drive-through at a Starbucks and buying the coffee for the driver behind me.

I misunderstood the concept of the give away, so I giv it one more shot.

think High street or Lush uptown would work very well in the upcoming most demanding project ever that I'm pre-working on.

How do I stay happy in my home? Mostly by just being here. This year we spent the entire vacation at home and it was the best on ever, with the exception of the trip across the world to Fort Myers, FL which was pure magic. My youngest son can't understand why anyone want to go abroad in the summer when Sweden is it's very best - we have everything we could ever want right here. With the exception of a beach LOL.

I am also happy that I have one kid still in my home for at lest two more years, empty nest syndrome isn't fun and every hour John is still here, makes this a happy home. And when Sam is here, it's a double happy home

My new sewing space upstairs, make me happy all the time, it hasn't really sunk in yet, that this is mine :-D

Hoping for fabric luck, that probably will not happen due to all these comments ;-(

Thank you Judi for the wonderful post. It really made me think. I also stress all the time over everything and those other things seem to pull me from doing what I love most...sewing and quilting. There always seems to be housecleaning, cooking, gardening, and other "stuff". There seems to be no time for just me! I think I need to do just that. Oh, I could go on and on about the guilt I feel when I do make time to quilt but I won't. Youre right you do feel better just talking about it. I love all your fabrics and especially Josephine by French Quarter. But I need to step out of my box and would love Sunnyside.

When I was younger and had small children I so envied and coveted those who had! I am older and a tiny bit wiser now and realize how much more I have than many and I try to be greatful every day for what I have. Not just a second of thought but deep thought and thankfulness which helps me to truly be happier. And when I am able to get something I would like to have but knew I could live without it is appreciated so much more than in the past. Also, always go with your "gut" and what you love for the most happiness!

I'm in the process of changing jobs, and not just jobs, careers-- from the medical world to the legal world. Big changes. These changes will give me more time with my family (on weekends) and more time with the hubs (in the evenings). I'm excited, though anxious.

Portia said...

Love your new lines in the shop too! Sunnyside is gorgeous, but a close second would be High Street or Sweet Serenade. Great choices!

I'm on a holiday kick right now (2 Halloween quilts complete and 5 Christmas quilts in the works) so I'd have so say my favorite is the Aspen Frost :).

My home is chaos at the moment. With a 17 month old another use in 2 months I've learned I just let theimperfections go. My house was decorated really cute but then everything had to be shifted up a few shelves due to little hands or put in the garage for a couple of years. I look forward to when I get a chance to actually out it all back together. Love how your bedding turned out :)

you are right about coveting getting us into trouble...it is easy to look at what others have and become unhappy with what we have...remember what our blessings are...there was nothing in the store that i coveted...

I love Josephine, because my new favorite color is red.

I stay calm and content by spending time in prayer and reading the Bible. If I start my day this way, the rest of my day goes better.

I stay content because when I see my children and grandchildren and my husband are doing well and feeling happy. Family is the most important thing: when they are happy I am happy too. I am priviliged !

Sunnyside is definitely my favorite :-)

Your post struck a nerve! I have so much to say about this because it was only this year that it dawned on me just how much I was letting social media influence how I was thinking and also how much time I was spending on it. Earlier this year I was determined to blog more and then in March I realized--wait--it is too much. Too much time went into it. I love Instagram and do spend time on there but I now just glance at blogs and don't pay much attention to Facebook. Last year during the elections I hid a lot of people who posted things, from stuff I agreed with to stuff I didn't, all depending on the tone. Also, I was in a lot of various email groups and so on. Earlier this summer I had to go through my email files and I wanted to weep at the amount of time and attention I put into the internet. I have made some amazing friends and it is really my only social interaction, but wow. My kids are now 19 & 23 years old and if I could zoom myself back to the time when they were little kids and I would wish for time to spend on the computer--oh gosh. It just sickens me to think of the time I spent plugged in elsewhere when I could have been spending the time on my babies. I have a friend who limits her time on the computer to one half hour per day. Per day!! I am trying to emulate her. She manages to stay in touch with a lot of people and 'in the know', but still gets a ton of stuff done. I know that isn't exactly what you were talking about, but I know your kids are little & that they keep you hopping. Embrace that and unplug a bit is my advice. That they think you are amazing is the only thing that matters. I have to remind myself of this everyday in my own life!

As for the covet and compare thing--that is hard. I often compare myself to other people but then try to remember that old saying--don't compare your every day life to others' highlight reel. We share what we're proud of. We don't get to see that other people might have maids, or problems paying the bills, or are elbow deep in cleaning a dirty toilet. At the end of the day, what matters is the people in your family and what they think of you, and that's it.

FWIW, I love your white duvet cover. My SIL has one on her bed and then has bed scarves at the bottom for color, along with nice pillows. It looks so nice. I want to do that, but with quilts at the bottom of the bed. I just have to MAKE the quilts. ;)

Personally, I haven't figured out how to stay content and happy all the time. I fall into society's traps just like you. Then I read something like your post and it helps snap me out of it. Also, I have learned that when I get overly grumpy and envious and discontent it is usually because I'm too focused on myself. I refocus on my husband and children and feel so much better. I remind myself that I don't have to be anyone but myself and my family/home/marriage does not need to look or be like anyone else's. Blessings to you and your family, Judi.
By the way, I like both versions of your bedroom : )

treewytch said...

If I start to feel things getting on top of me or throwing me out of kilter I take a cup of coffee out into the garden and sit in my swing chair, just me, the birds and the trees. It's impossible to feel pressured when nature surrounds me with her simple glories.

Barb said...

Judi, I think you are truly amazing and the people you have compared yourself to have nothing on you....trust me but I do understand. I am never happy with myself but happy with what I have...that is where my evil comes in...comparing myself to other....drives me crazy and for sure I will never measure up...I don't live in their shoes only mine. I know what my weaknesses are not theirs...that being said. I am totally happy with what I have just not me. I love everything in your store...can I say that?

Jan Marie said...

I come on thinking that I would put Honey sweet by fig tree down but right above that is the one I am coveting....It is High Street by laura ashbury. Some days contentment means just being able to check on thing, big or small off the list.

My husband and two children give me the most contentment but I still need a bit of time alone most days to ground and re-centre myself. I wouldn't be as happy without my family but I also wouldn't be as happy without a bit of alone either!

It was so wonderful to know I am not the only person who does that. I wish that every person could read your post and think about it. You have made me stop and realize what I am doing.
I really love Lush Uptown and I will have to purchase it at some time because I just have to have to have it. Hope you still have it when that time comes :)

RenaissanceSandi said...

I love the Aspen by Basic Grey! Anything that looks a bit "scrapbook" pulls me in because I have been scrapping for 20 years. As to the second part of the question, I LOVE Pinterest, but I remind myself often that God has blessed me with such an abundance of more than I need, that I need to shop in my own closet before I run out to buy more! I also made a rule...if a new pair of shoes comes in to the house, an old pair has to be donated. That makes me think twice before I buy!

Joyful Mom said...

Actually, I've been thinking of Sunnyside all week and imagining quilts to sew. Your flower patch pattern would be adorable I believe. Watching my family wrap up in quilts I've made makes me feel happy and content.

Loving High Street and Honeysweet right now! Things that make me happy at home have to be time spent with my hubby and dog. Just sitting on the couch doing nothing is great if we are together!

Unknown said...

I think my favorite is High Street - it's so bright and fun!

I stay content by taking "me" time - time to relax and forget the world. Or Skyping with my nieces; amazing how little kids remind you of what really matters! :)

Deb said...

I like the Honey Sweet line. Oooh, I would love the Sunnyside bundle!!!

Deb said...

Knowing that the Lord has placed me just where is best for me keeps me happy and content in my home.

Debbie B said...

I can't decide if I like Sunnyside or Honeysweet better. I always try and remember the things I did get done instead of the things that fell to the wayside. You just can't do everything, but be happy with what you did accomplish! For you, it is really a lot!!!

Unknown said...

I love Sunnyside; and i maintain a peaceful home by taking time to quilt! it makes the 100 little imperfections around the house seem not-so-serious when i can create something awesome :)

Rhonda Kennedy said...

I'm probably not the example to follow here, but I am all about fun. :). I don't stress over the home and housework but instead spend as much time as I can with my family.
Thank you for sharing your story and being so honest. It is easy for us to look at other people life's and think they have it so much better when the reality is we do not know what is truly going on behind their doors.
Studying my Bible really helps keep me grounded, but I'm only human and have those same feelings from time to time.

I liked Giggles in your new lines and that lead me to think of a quote by Erma Bombeck, that helps keep perspective. "If you can laugh at it, you can live with it."

I am loving that Chantilly line coming in December. Beautiful! Sometimes it helps me to go for a walk around the neighborhood. Fresh air, quiet, and peaceful.

Cori said...

First off, I absolutely love your blog and how honest you are. It's so refreshing! I find that two things help me stay content--not comparing myself to others, and expressing gratitude often. Sometimes it's just something little, like my baby taking a really good nap, but when you recognize all the good things in your life, it's hard not to be happy!

Katookie said...

Absolutely love High Street. Attending church every Sunday will normally keep me focused. But sometimes it's normally once I try to be someone else that I become lost and uncomfortable making Me realize that I am best being ME!

Karrie said...

I keep my bedroom (where I also sew at) clean and tidy. If I have clothes all over or papers I don't feel like doing anything, especially when it's out of control!

Karrie said...

I'm definitely excited for Sunnyside!!

PeggySuesMom said...

I have to choose ONE?! Then Sunnyside is at the top of my list. The colors just speak to me. And how to stay happy - there's a tough one. But I am lucky enough that, for me, quilting is a JOY and not a JOB. I try to enjoy each step in the process and not get distracted by "getting it done". I am amazed at how much more productive this has made me.

My favorite new line in your shop is a toss up between Sunnyside and High Street. Beautiful!

I do my best to stay content by reminding myself how fortunate we are in so many ways: good health, plenty of love, our faith.

Modascapes is what I would choose. They are all lovely but my bed needs a new look since my husband painted the walls.

Dolores said...

I surround myself with things I love - art is what I love, or I start a new project. That's how I stay contented.

Heather said...

I think Barcelona is my favorite new line. What great colors!

Heather said...

I was able to give up envy many years ago when I realized what I had was enough for me. Of course, my goals change with time and I'm always working on new projects and activities, but overall, I know deep down that I already have enough and whatever anyone else has or achieves does not detract from my own accomplishments/happiness.

Mimi said...

I love Highstreet. My favorite contented things to do are canning garden produce and sewing outside. I love both and I feel so peaceful doing those things.
I really admire how you balance everything.

Oh, my! Being content i my home has been interesting since we are in a new one. I have spent the last 6 months rearranging and moving things around and painting. I try to live with the things I have and move them around until I get it right... It has been a bit allusive. But I feel I am getting thre.
Barcelona is my favorite!!!

Judi, you really are not alone! I find myself doing the same thing at times and have to just step back and realize all that I have and what a blessing it is. I am very happy with our house, just most often covet a cleaning crew ;-) Oh to dream!

Also, I love too many of the new lines to just pick one favorite. Thanks so much for the chance to win.

I like Giggles! Such cute fabrics!

Unknown said...

It's hard to pick a favorite but it would be a toss up between Sunnyside, Lush Uptown and Honeysweet. I love all three of these lines although they are very different. I think technology although a wonderful tool has also made it hard not to get caught up in "coveting" because everything is so accessible. FOr me, the best way to avoid this is to limit myself on these websites and to concentrate on all my blessings.

Years ago, I went to a presentation where the speaker held up a piece of beautiful embroidery, then flipped it over to the back and pointed out the knots and the loose floss and how unlike the perfectly pattern front it was. THAT, she says, is what our lives are all really like - a side we show to others, and a mess behind the image.

Joette said...

Thank you Judi, for sharing how you feel; I am in exactly the same boat. Comparing ourselves to others is NOT healthy, and yet I can't tell you how many times I do it. Reading your post was a nice reminder that I am not alone. it helps :-).

I think everyone deals with "keeping up with the Joneses." So don't feel bad! Remember how much you love being with your kiddos-the time you have with little ones will fly by. My oldest is off to college this week. It went fast.

Also, remember that you are incredibly talented. There are hundreds of us that wish to be just like you!

I like to relax by reading or going to a movie. Quilting with a beautiful stack of fabric would be awesome too! :)))
