Content vs Covet - oh and a giveaway!

***update*** giveaway closed.
 before
Okay, so this is my bed before. I wanted to share this with you because I love it. My mom made this quilt and the pillows for me and I have loved them for two years now.  But, every now and again a change is in need.  I'll explain.  I have spent the last couple months stressing over a few things, mostly quilting and designing and all the hopes and dreams that come with this job.  Also, add teaching into the mix for next year and I find that I have been a little stressed because of the planning I have to do now.

So, what do I do?  I stalk Instagram, Facebook and blogs (all things quilty) out there and I become a little obsessed - maybe too much.  I find myself taking on more projects, I amp up my goals and I drive myself crazy trying to accomplish more than I need to. And, then I make a critical mistake.  I start comparing myself to others.  Which of course leads to coveting.  Pretty sure I know why one of the ten commandments is "Thou shalt not covet."  It really is so dangerous because you start to be unhappy with what you have.  Tell me you do this too and that I am not the only one that has fallen into the trap of discontentment.  So, I pull back - thank heavens for family who are patient and can help me realize the source of all my crazy.

after
So, I went to the store.  Bound and determined to have a "trendy" new bed spread - colors and all, but you know what I found out?  I went with the colors I love.  I am drawn to earthy colors and I always have been.  The white fluffy bedspread I wanted became cream, flat and quilted - the turquoise pillows became green.  Instead of changing out my rusty orange drapes, I got pillows to compliment them. It was a change that I needed for the moment, but I realized I wanted the colors I love, not what Pinterest shows me are "in."

closeup
That is when I realized that the last couple months of comparing myself to others has made me so unhappy.  We are all so different and thank heavens for that.  We don't have to love the same things and have the same colors in our houses.  It is funny how Social Networking is so awesome, yet - it can make you jealous of everyone else.  So, I have decided that I will stop it!  I will cut back on the time I spend on Social Networks (it was bad, darn smart phone) and I will realize that what I have is all I need.  I will stay true to myself and what I love and not worry about others who seem to be accomplishing so much more than me.

So, that means I am back on my schedule.  I got off it and boy, that always gets me in a bind.  It has changed a bit, but I am completely mom in the morning.  I even started exercising today.  I think I need that. Since I will have three kids in school, and one that naps - I will only work 3 hours in the afternoon during nap time and one hour after bedtime.  4 hours - that is it.  Oh, and that means more time in the evening with Clint, so happy about that.

So, if you find yourself being unhappy with what you have - take a step back, or a break from comparing and realize that each one of us has different talents, abilities and we are all amazing in our own way.  I really believe that, I just sometimes lose sight of it.  So, thanks for letting me get that off my chest.  It really helps to talk about it.  Anyway - to thank you for reading, especially this long post - I would like to give away a beautiful fat quarter bundle to one of you.

giveaway
Sunnyside by Kate Spain for Moda.  It is beautiful.  It is one of the new lines we have in the shop and I can not think of anything more fun than cutting into this line and making beautiful quilt tops.  I want one of you to be able to do just that.

Sunnyside
Oh, and the new camera - totally awesome.  Still learning, but can you see how amazing having a "close up" setting is? I love playing with my camera and hope to be really good someday. All in good time.

So, two chances to win.  Tell me your favorite new line in our shop, then tell me how you stay content and happy in your own home.

Thanks everyone!  Good luck.

I really like Modascapes but the honeysuckle (which is out of my normal comfort zone) is calling to me! Since we've just moved across country I'm finding it difficult to be content in our new home. We're renting until we find the right neighborhood so I don't feel like I can truly make this OUR home. I have to wait for a little while yet.

Blessings to you that you have found contentment at such an early age when for some it takes a lifetime. You have been blessed to have developed your own unique style of longarm quilting. You have such widom in knowing your faith and family are first. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I was looking hard at a bundle of Barcelona yesterday, but the Sunnyside bundle is also beautiful, thank you for the chance to win.

I think my current favorite is the Collection for a Cause LOVE. I can so relate to your post, Judi. I think sites like Pinterest can make you feel like you should have it all and do it all. I noticed this a lot as my daughter and I planned her recent wedding. We both came to the realization once again that people matter more than things. People remember how they felt that day, not the decorations.

Leanne said...

In the end what matters in your home is that your children laugh, play and learn and you do too. The rest is not that important, it is nice to see ideas and choices but you are on the right track when you stuck to your own favourite colours and things.

Tryon said...

I love giggles on so many levels!! One the word "giggles" is so happy and the action "giggles" is so fun! Then there is the colors-love them!

Lisa England said...

Barcelona and Sunnyside are the two I love most.

Tryon said...

Now how to I become content. It is an evolving door. Some days it is stopping to hear the birds sing or listen to your favorite song but mostly it is remembering you are loved.

Lisa England said...

I'm not one to follow trends so my house is full of things that suit my taste and make me happy. Lately we've done some updates that I'm very pleased with -- it's amazing what some fresh paint can do!

Marilyn Popplewell said...

As Paul said, I have learned to be content in whatever state I am." It has taken me years to realize that God has placed people in my life for a reason. So now when life seems to change I know God is there moving me the direction I need to go.

I think the Sunnyside line by Kate Spainis my new favorite line.

Blessings to you.

Happy and content are constant works in progress. I wish I had more time to quilt but right now I have taken on too many volunteer positions. I am going to let them run their time and then I am going to sit back for awhile. It's hard.

I find staying happy means accepting things as they come, that means sometime I don't get what I want, but normally something better comes along.

Your bed looks so pretty with your new cover and pillows. It's a completely different look even though you stayed with your tried-and-true colors. Nice to see something different, too! Too much conformity out there - it's been driving me truly nuts the last couple of months. Although I've never had problems with social media like Pinterest making me feel unhappy with what we have or what I am, I've found that our personal route to being content with our lot and not going nuts trying to acquire things or be like others is to not have any broadcast TV at our home. It's amazing - we still watch shows we like, but only from DVD with no commercials. After 7 years or so of that, I can't stand broadcast TV - as much for the over-commercialization as for the numerous interruptions (do folks really wonder where so much of our children's ADD comes from?).

But back to your post, Judi - I sure hope I didn't contribute to your struggle lately with the comparisons of the twin quilts that you and Kay quilted for me. I love diversity and thrive on seeing it. It was such an honor to have each of you contribute your interpretations, and there's no comparison in terms of one or the other being better - because they are each different takes on awesomeness, celebrating to me what is so wondrous about God's creation - uniqueness and individuality that shines for its very differentness. I hope that's how you felt, too, because it's wonderful that you contributed to such a perfect demonstration of there being more than one right way to create great beauty! Throw conformity out the window and give us confidence in individuality~!

I like the simply style line by v and co. I am most content napping with my 3 month old on my chest. There's really nothing like it.

Tennjenny said...

I don't do Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, and I'm glad! Ok, sometimes I feel left out, but mostly I'm glad. I do, however, read lots of blogs (too many), and spend too much time on Flickr seeing all the amazing inspiration. This may sound a little weird, but I stay content in my home by getting enough sleep. I mean, I don't always, but if I want to be content, the key for me is enough sleep. The difference in my personality and well-being is radical. I'm just one of those people who needs a lot of sleep. Thank you again, and great post.

Hi,

First of all, I once got a fortune in a fortune cookie that said "Enough is as good as a feast." I love that. Just to be content with what I have. It is enough and that is awesome. Your post is just lovely and I agree that networking sites like Fcebook create some sense of false need in us. Not so healthy. You are doing a wise thing by deemphasizing it.

Secondly, I love the Lush line. But there are so many pretty ones. You guys carry lots if pretty stuff.

Thanks for the opportunity..

Fresh Serenade, Lush Uptown, Sunnyside, - oh I love them all! It is so hard to choose! The things that we should do - we don't; while the things we should not do, we keep doing. Prayer is the answer for me.

I like the colors in High Street.

I agree with what you said! Being true to yourself is so very important.

That's a lovely giveaway stack. I don't always stay content, but mindlessly sewing helps. As does being with flowers and nature. Taking time not to be in a rush, and realizing that material things really don't matter--they'll be "out of style" tomorrow. Your home should contain things you love--and your free time should be spent doing things you enjoy or care about. My favorite fabric is Giggles--happy fabric...that helps me be content too!

Kathy said...

I love Honeysweet by Figtreefabrics. The colors are so nice. I like most of their fabrics.
I stay content by working as a nurse, going to church, sewing quilts and playing with my 2 adorable Boston Terriers ( Lucy and Cameo). I also try to be happy with what I have and not what others have. It is always a struggle, we won't more. As I get older I wonder why I had to collect so many things. I would like to declutter and live more simply...
Thank you for the chance to win the give-a-way...
Be happy and enjoy your family. Wish I had had children. They are God's gift to us all...

Pamela said...

I really like several, but Sunnyside is my favorite! Staying content is hard, I find it easiest when I remember how much I have to be thankful for and journaling my blessings. So many things that I take for granted, but when I see them in black and white it really makes me feel content.

How to stay content? Just trying to be the best me I can be. I read a quote once that said, "If both of us are alike, then one of isn't necessary." (something like that) That made me realize that it was important that I AM different, that I bring something different to the table, a new way of looking at things.

When I am feeling envious of someones talent or home or ect I go to a little stream by my house and just sit and listen to the ripples. It doesn't take long for me to remember family is better than things. Sunnyside reminds me of flowers.

Marelize Ries said...

I too sit for hours every day, reading blogs, instagram and pnterest, and yes it an be a bit overwhelming, especially since everything I see I want, I find it hard sometimes being just happy with what I have, but the moment I've made/quilted something pretty for myself I feel a bit better, so my best therapy i guess is quilting... I have to just remind myself that not all of us have or will ever have it all, if we did what will drive us?

Marelize Ries said...

I really like the Giggles by me and my sister... Bright and cheery.... Thanks for the chance :-)

Judy, you are so right about content vs. covet. We can really get wrapped up in what others are doing and have. I'm content when things are just plain simple. For some reason there is a freedom in that. Thanks again.

Brakmack said...

Thanks for the great post and chance to win. I love Sunnyside! I also fall into that trap of comparing talent, time and self worth when I see everything that is on the sites I visit. You are not alone. The best I can do is step back and enjoy when I get to sew, enjoy the time I do get at home when I am not working to be with my 5 year old son and husband. At times i have to remind myself to be present and enjoy NOW. Thx again!

My current favorite is Hill Street by Lily Ashbury, with Sunnyside being a very close second. I'm counting the days until Scrumptious is available. Staying content can be a challenge, some days more than others. When I start feeling down or jealous, I remind myself of how much better my life is today than it was 7 years ago, when I was single, and had been for many years. I was lonely a lot of the time, even with my wonderful family. And then, I met the man who is now my husband. He is a constant reminder every day of how amazingly lucky I am.

Mirabelle said...

Favourite fabric line at the moment would have to be Sunnyside of course, and it would be perfect for a special little girl who has just come into our lives. What keeps me content is playing in my sewing room creating beautiful quilts for family away from all the negativity in the world today

Thank you so much for your wise words. It is so easy pick certain aspects of other's life and feel that you should match all of them. One of my biggest turning points in life was when I decided that our home should be for the persons living there, first and foremost, not to meet other people's expectations. Now, I love when people come over because I can focus on them, not worry if the house looks great.

Is it wrong if I say that Sunnyside is my favorite? I love the modern bright colors with lots of yellow (my favorite color). If I have to pick a second favorite it would be High Street by Lily Ashbury. I stay content at home by being creative. Trying to spend a little time every week doing things I love.

Jacqueline said...

I think I would go with Honeysweet as a favorite right now.

When my house is in order I am content. It doesn't have to be "see your reflection in the floor" clean but everything has to be in its place. I get real antsy when I let things get messy (sewing room) for very long.

Thanks for a chance.

Cindy said...

Sunnyside is my favorite line but I also love Honeysweet! Thanks for such a generous giveaway! I agree with you- sometimes you just have to step back and be grateful for what you have. Alittle rearranging and some fresh paint works wonders for me for alittle update!:)

My favorite line is Honey Street. Love the fall colors

I stay content by stopping and being thankful for all the blessing I have. It makes me realize I already have way more than I could ever deserve.

Great post, Judi! Very thought provoking. Your bedroom looks great! Glad you went with your gut. I'm sure it brings peace every time you walk in. I think your surroundings are so important to how you feel. Filling my home with things I love helps me be content and happy in my home. Of course, I'd love more space, bigger closets, etc., but I am so very grateful for what I have. As far as I what I love in your shop - of them is the High Street by Lily Ashbury! Thanks so much for the chance to win!

You've explained what happened to me a few years ago perfectly. My nemesis was the Yahoo longarm quilters group. I saw all of the beautiful work they were doing and completely lost my confidence in what I could do. Long story short, I wound up getting a full time job that pays better and limited my quilting to my own projects. Now quilting is a hobby again and makes me content. I love Josephine and Honeysweet...they're both beautiful!

Joanna said...

Aspen Frost is one of my favorites. Your choice of colors for your re-do looks so calming; I congratulate you on figuring out what you needed to make you happier.

Joanna said...

I've always compared myself to others and that just doesn't do any good. Now I try to do what's right for me, and when I have fears or doubts, I ask myself, "Who's going to stop me?" and the answer is always "I stop myself."

Laughing Owl said...

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this, as somehow it always feels better to know you are not the only one. I am very far from being an experienced or able creafter, and I spend way too much time reading other people's blogs. This results either in starting too many projects, trying to make everything and being upset when it does not work out well (and it usually doesn't, as no skill comes at once) or in being afraid to start anything, because I can't be as good as those super great crafters I see on the web... I haven't actually found a recipe to cure this, so often enough my reading list provides doubts and distress instead of inspiration it is supposed to give. But I do hope to find a way to fight this one day :)
Oh, and all of the collections in the shop are wonderful, I actually want them all :) But if I were to choose one, I would choose Lush Uptown.
Thank you for this chance to win fabulous fabrics.

1st: Yrs ago I was asked to run for a statewide political office (my cousin was Governor in another state, and I grew up in a hyper politically active fam) so I was thrilled! And I was conflicted. I was homeschooling 3 bright sons and I had known in my heart that my dh was going to be called to serve as Bishop in our part of the vineyard. So how could I do it all? After the 4 hr mtg when I was asked, strategy, financial support, etc was discussed I sat on our sofa with dh and just sobbed. He knew I wanted this opportunity to change the world big time. He knew I would bring courage to do the right thing, to speak out, the spiritual foundation to choose well, et al.
But I just sat there and sobbed.
He took my hand and said, "You know what you have just found out?" I squeaked out a "Yes" and a "No."
He said, "You have just realized in a very personal way, The World Already Has Its Savior. It doesn't need another."
This bit of wisdom has since saved me every time I try to be more than my most impt role. Be content through balance. You will never be content through things, awards, books, as sometimes the soul price is too high.
2nd: As cute as those fabrics are, I am content with the fabrics I have, pass my winnings onto someone else.
3rd: Please do not feel pressure from us to DO or BE more. Just last week I studied your blog for FMQing ideas for a customer's bold top and found numerous skills to use in creating a great finish for a bridal shower quilt. So Thank You for sharing your talents. Learning and doing bring contentment.

I think my favorites are either Sunnyside or Giggles. Speaking of giggles, making time to play with my almost two year old makes me happy. His giggles are the best!

I am loving High Street right now. My favorite way to destress is to get up on a Saturday morning have a cup of coffee and then sew or read a book in silence.

I was looking at your new lines the other day, in your shop, and thought that "Sunnyside" would make such an awesome light to dark (side to side) quilt. It would certainly reflect the quick weather changes in Florida. Now you are giving away the fat quarters. I would surely love to win.
I also like your Frame pattern. Never thought about framing string blocks like that. Great idea!

When I get moody I get in the car, drive two miles to Baskin Robbins and eat a scoop or two of Jamocha Fudge Almond ice cream. It works every time.

This is the first thing I read this morning and I could have written this yesterday myself! So true that social media puts a lot of unnecessary self-imposed pressure on us.Small doses are fun but balance is crucial! Thank you! And I was drooling over Sunnyside last night! love it!

Hi Judi,

I can totally relate to you. It's the grass is always greener thing, but also there are so many choices out there and with the internet you can see so many instantly! It's easy to want all that stuff...just remember its stuff. Learning to be content with what you have is not easy.

I really like Josephine by French General.

Thanks for the giveaway.

I try not to get caught up in all the hype of whats "in". Don't get me wrong, I'm like everyone else and would like "new", but I think I'm a very practical person. As a kid growing up (there were 6 of us) we didn't have a lot, but we made do. I think we live in a very "throw away" society and that's just not acceptable to me. I'm not on Pinterest or Instagram so I don't get caught up in any of that. I guess I'm just a content person and I would love to stay home and create more than anything else.

Seems I'm so often reminded of how blessed I am - just yesterday in Walmart there was a middle-aged lady wearily pushing a cart one-handed. Her left arm was entirely missing and she walked with the aid of a prosthetic left leg. Thinking of all those little everyday tasks we take for granted that become a major undertaking when faced with this kind of misfortune. My stash closet overflows, and I know you'll find just the person who needs your wonderful giveaway.

Carla said...

Well, I do love the new Sunnyside. I stay content by being thankful for what I have. One needs to only turn the T.V on to see turmoil everywhere. We are so blessed.

My favorite line would be Giggles. As for being content..I wish I had words of wisdom. You really do need to step back, take a breath and reflect. I have a sister I envy and sometimes it's tough, but I am happy with what I have and just accept we are two different people with two different life styles and I love my family and material things just aren't there for me. So I love the people and not "things".

I love High Street and Honeysweet.
I avoid Pinterest like the plague. My issue is that I consider it a waste of time because I can never afford to buy everything I would want and I end up making myself feel bad that I am not more successful = more money to buy everything. So avoiding creating the problem helps me be happier. (besides school + internship + helping gma w/housework leaves me a little strapped for time)

Love them all don't really have a favorite, my daughter would love any thing made with the Sunnyside fabric line, hint, hint. About the whole social media thing...stay true to your heart you will never go wrong. Have you ever thought of folding your mom's wonderful quilt on the bottom of your bed?

Barb in Mi said...

Your blog post is oh-so-true, love your new bed set-up. My favorite fabric line is currently Barcelona.
How to stay content & happy: yes, I too avoid social media and TV for several years by now! I think this "more is better" and you have got to have all things advertised to keep up, is silly, expensive and still leaves you feeling empty and dissatisfied. Love to spend time in nature to bring things back into perspective.
Thanks and best of luck for you journey!

I really like the Barcelona line.

I stay content always trying to remember in all the ways I am blessed. Sometimes I feel frustrated about something in my life but I work hard to always remind myself that God is in control and he has a plan!

Jenny Jensen said...

To stay happy in my own home I just try to make sure its always picked up, fresh, and not too untidy (which is difficult with young children). Especially at night before going to bed...I make sure things are picked up so when my kids wake me up before the sun, I don't feel overwhelmed with clutter on top of being completely exhausted. I'm not too big on decorating, so I don't worry a lot about that. Sure, I'd like to have a cute, decorated-like-a-magazine house, but right now I'm just trying to keep my kids alive, healthy, and happy. They are my world.

Getting some prospective is always a sure way to being and staying content. In some stages of life that has meant regular volunteering. Currently, I have little ones at home so now gaining that prospective is through being informed about things going on in the world (like the plight of refugees in the Sudan) or in my backyard (through a food pantry we donate to).

And I stay content by quilting for others. Working with our quilt ministry has helped me remember (constantly!) just how blessed I am! So I quilt for the ministry about 30 hours a week, and take care of my adorable granddaughters to stay young at heart!! A recipe for contentment!

Your post hit close to home as I had been looking at other people's lives on Facebook and thinking I would rather be there than here sometimes. I remind myself that what you see is what everyone wants you to see and often people don't post their own struggles. I try to look around and remind myself how good I have it (and I do have it good) and consider myself blessed which I know I am. Cutting down on social media helps a lot!

I find that talking to my husband about things that worry or bother me helps me be more content. He is always able to calm me down and put things into perspective. I try to remind myself that no matter what happens to me, there is always someone out there dealing with something much worse and I minimize their problems by crying about mine.

Thank you so much for this post. I know you're not the only one that suffers from discontent sometimes! To stay fresh at home I clean out my craft/quilting room. Rearranging things helps me fall back in love with the fabrics and supplies I already have and lets me really see everything in a new light. It gets the creative juices flowing again with new inspiration. :)

Karen said...

I love the Barcelona new line. That's my kind of color palette!

Gale, Ky quilter said...

Like you, I must stay away from so much social media . . . facebook, pinterest, quilting blogs to stay content. Everyone has new fabrics or techniques or patterns & I can't have them all! So, I try to cut my time in these places & take a look around me and count my blessing with what I do have . . . which is plenty, believe me. I think all quilters or fabric lovers struggle with this. There is only a certain amount we can sew, buy or try so just do what you can do!!!! And be happy!!!! That's my strategy. :)

Thank you for your post... I get caught up in Pinterest and all the blogs I subscribe to and keeping sighing and wondering where I will ever find the time to make the quilts I keep seeing and loving. I need to spend less time on the computer and more time with my machine. Love, absolutely adore, the modascapes. Modern fabrics are lushious but am still drawn to using more country colours.
