I made a quilt!

Strip This Quilt1
Okay, first off - part of my new "balance" and schedule for the year is allowing time for me to piece quilts.  I love to piece, sometimes people just think I long arm quilt.  But, I started this whole journey piecing quilts and that is what I crave to do in my free time.  I really enjoy cutting into fabric and sewing it all back together again. I am sure you know what I mean ;-)

Strip This Quilt2
This quilt was made with a "Mama Said Sew" jelly roll and I used my pattern "Strip this Quilt. I love this fabric, I had to snatch this jelly roll before it was all gone from our shop. So, I have been holding onto this for the perfect project. This quilt is only mine for a minute before I ship it to friend who is having a baby.

Strip This Quilt3
I am proud to say that no two same fabrics (color and pattern) are touching - I am slightly OCD about that. This quilt uses just one jelly roll and most of the time you can use the left over jelly roll strips to use as the binding, but I did not want flowers in this quilt and I had four flower pattern strips that would not work for this quilt, so I went to my LQS and bought the black binding.  I love it!

Strip This Quilt4
My boys are always there to help when I pull out a quilt to take pictures of.
I love these little people!
Strip This Quilt5
A free-motion swirl is just great for this baby quilt. I am sure the baby won't mind that I did not do a custom quilt job.

Strip This Quilt6
Minky is the key to a soft and cuddly blanket and the black with white polka dot was hard to refuse! I love it! I used Hobbs 80/20 for the batting, so it was a little thick quilting, but I did not have any problems with the Minky on the back.  When you quilt with Minky, just remember to not pull the fabric too hard, because it can stretch a lot and bunch if you do.

4 projects for this month - I feel like I am on a roll.  February will not be as productive because of a trip I have planned, but I will try to stick to the schedule as much as possible though.  I am super excited about the next quilt on the frames - it is going to be back breaking for sure, but so worth it!  I cannot wait to share it with you.  Have a fabulous weekend everyone!

HI Judi,

I love your work-and the new quilt you just made. I follow you regularly as well. Like you, I am a longarm quilter too but only hope to quilt as well as you do some day. Thanks for all the inspiration.

very lovely. Great choice of the spirals for the quilting design. and then the binding goes with it so well. I hadn't seen the spotted minky yet. very nice.

Isn't this just delightful! I love minky for a baby quilt and the binding really is wonderful with the swirl quilting.

Beautiful Judi, isn't minky lovely for the back of baby quilts, so soft.

Great Job! Isn't it amazing how much can be accomplished with a little effort in the "time management" department?

Duh -- Minky STRETCHES?!! I have tried twice using Minky for backing, and both times I thought the quilt top shrank and that was why the backing sagged between quilting lines. I probably stretched the snot out of it when I layered the quilt. Maybe I will give Minky another try. Your baby quilt is lovely and your friend is one very
ucky mommy-to-be!

I'm taking your time management to heart and getting ready to implement some of my own... Thanks for the inspiration!!

Hello, love the quilt - just a question, forgive me for not knowing (I am new to quilting) what is Minky? I live in the North of England and proper quilting shops are very scarce around here, I wish that we had American style quilting shops, you are are so lucky. Cheers Sharon

I think the Mama Said Sew fabric from Moda was my favourite last year. I love the red and white, and the graphic patterns were fabulous. It's great you got to make a quilt with it, and I bet with that Minky, it will feel great for a baby.

Love your Mama Said Sew quilt! I was at Road to California yesterday and saw a couple of quilts that you had quilted, including the one you did for my friend Thelma. She was so proud to have won a ribbon! Your work is so beautiful.

Good for you! And a jelly roll too! I always want to do something more the fabrics. I'll like one and want a bigger piece of it. It is great to get in one of your own projects in between customer quilts. I've got a whole weekend myself to piece! Liking the ironing part. It is cold!

Gorgeous! I wish I could gather up the courage to try minky on the back of a quilt. I just haven't yet. I am still trying to figure out what works best on the long arm without throwing that in!

Hello, Judi. I am, I'm sure, your number one fan. I visit your blog daily, more than once, sometimes. Come see what's new (and rejoice when there are new posts), but also for inspiration. I have a Longarm, but I'm still a beginner. I was in Houston a few times and in 2012 I took some classes with some teachers (great classes, great teachers) and had a questionnaire also asked us if we wanted to indicate a teacher. I pointed you, of course, because I hope to take classes with you someday.
Thank you for your generosity in sharing your gift.
I am Brazilian and I live in São Paulo, where I have a quilt shop since 2000.
Sorry to write here, but I did not find your e-mail.
Thanks for everything.
