If you have been following me on Instagram and Facebook you will have noticed that this quilt is in the works. It has been fun to work on and I have a surprise design in the works which will be revealed when I finish this up. Hopefully I will finish this week, lofty goal I know. When I post pictures of my work, most comments are so positive, but every now and again I get comments that are just ignorant. Maybe they don't mean to be, maybe I am just reading into it - but it is hard sometimes to understand why people have to give their opinion if it is negative. If you don't like something - don't comment, right? Treat other people the way you want to be treated, and be happy for other people's successes. It's really simple - my parents taught me that. I will just say this - I don't quilt to cuddle with my projects, I quilt to show off my quilting. So if you think it looks "too stiff" then my quilting is not for you and please do not tell me you think that way. There is a reason I use two layers of batting for all my quilts. Anyway - off my soap box. I do not know why the "negative nellie's" bug me so much, but sometimes they do! I am human.
Well, I just bought this camera
- it is my first DSLR. Here's hoping that I will take incredible pictures of my quilting to share with you. I will get it just in time to take pictures of this beauty once it is finished! Yay!

I love your quilting..........I also know I would not want to do it on every quilt that I own but this is your style of quilting and I love seeing the close snaps of how you have quilted things.......If I was in the USA I would love you to quilt one of my quilts........

I drool, dream and is inspired each and everytime you post your photo's on your blog. For those who do not realize the art of it, let them walk in your shoes first, it is not as easy as it looks.

ReplyDeleteoh, I love your quilting - it is amazing - people are funny aren't they. Your quilting is to be admired and looked at - sure not the same as the old quilt that the dog and I enjoy snuggling with on the couch watching TV. You are amazing. I love seeing photo's of what you do.

ReplyDeleteI think there are two kinds of quilts, the ones you look at and the ones you cuddle, some people don't know the difference. They're the losers. I started longarming (is that correct) a couple of years ago and I have learned so much from you and your blog post. Can hardly wait for your book to come out. You could keep everything you do a secret but thank you so much for sharing with the ones of us who appreciate it.

I'm always impressed with your posts, I love what you do with your quilting, you have that wonderful ability to change a flat piece of fabric to something completely different. I've always admire your photography and am a believer that there are those who take snapshots and those who take photographs.
You can have a top notch camera and take a snapshot and have an inexpensive one and take amazing photograph. You have a good eye as attested by your quilting designs.
You picked my favourite brand of camera I have different much older model, have fun with your new tool.

ReplyDeleteNegative comments are spawned from ignorance, no doubt. It's recognizing the difference between art and utility. Your quilting abilities are a gift. Keep honing and developing your gift. I am thankful that you share it with the rest of the world. Your work is worth striving towards and very inspirational. I'll just wish for lots of broken threads and eyelashing for the naysayers tee hee!

ReplyDeleteObviously, those making the negative comments are missing the whole aspect of the fact, the quilting is an art form in its own right. They're just ignorant and obviously were never taught the saying, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all".
Judy, you keep doing what you have an extraordinary talent and passion for. We never ever tire of looking at your exceptional work. And I know I speak for many when I say we eagerly await the next blog post that you put up.

Your quilting inspires me--and I can't imagine taking time to leave negative comments since sometimes I am so rushed that I don't always leave comments even when I love what I see. Therefore, my attitude would be if someone has time to make negative comments, the real issue has nothing to do with a blog post but a lot to do with the issues of the person making the comment.

Sometimes I think it is just plain "envy" that motivates these type of people to offer their opinions. You know what they say about opinions don't you??? (Opinions are like assholes........ everyone has one, and they usually stink!!!!) Hope that bought a smile........ no offense to those with a delicate nature,.......... but thats a thought I have to myself when the "psychic vampires" touch my life.

ReplyDeleteYeah, the comments probably stem from ignorance of not realizing what you do is an art...not merely a utility to bind three ( or FOUR) layers together to make a quilt to cuddle on the couch with. Granted, I would love to cuddle on the couch with one of your quilts and stare and touch...and stare at the amazing handiwork. It's amazing to me that you can make such stunning secondary designs on other people's creations. That's pretty awesome and an area I lack talent in.

ReplyDeleteDon't care about the negative comments. Look, you have "visitors" from all over the world who really like what you are doing!
To be honest I prefer more "widely" all-over quilting. But I think that is because I am still in the beginning of quilting, or because of the missing time. Since the quilting machine is not at my home and I have a fulltime job I move on to quilting that's done in a day or a weekend.
BUT: I love what you do! It looks so perfect to me and I hope I will be able to quilt just a bit as you do.
Take the negative comments as acknowledgement. People are jealous for what they can't afford themselves. So don't let them make you feel responsible for that.
I really love what you do and I really look forward to your book! :)

We can say don't let peoples comments or opinions affect you, but like you say we are human & most of us can be affected by others words. My comment is as always, your quilting ROCKS!!!!!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately you can't please all the people all of the time. You quilt in your own style and that is what is important - it is your creation and unlike anyone else's. Why would you have a wait list if your quilts were not beautiful?

It's hard to ignore negative comments but weigh them against all the positive feedback you get!
My first thought as I looked at your picture was "this woman is amazing". But I think that of all your pictures and quilts. You are extremely talented and I cannot believe someone would leave a negative comment. As a human I'm sure it bugs you but please focus on all the positive ones. Your work is wonderful!!!

I have used that phrase so often-"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"-that some of my closest friends say well, she doesn't like it, she didn't say anything. And, please, please keep sharing with us.

Those who are invited to your blog and don't like what you do can just quietly move on. There are plenty of other quilters that may quilt the way they want. So to those negative people...move on...

I read lots of blogs and see so many beautiful things and also so a lot of things that aren't "my taste", but I certainly don't tell anyone that! It makes you wonder if these people would actually say that to your face or if they just do it because it's online and somehow feel like it's okay? Either way, it's not!

ARGHHHHH! This is so pretty it HURTS me! I love the dense quilting and the puffy pop outs. Your quilting is a huge inspiration. Perhaps some of the negativity is just the way the written word comes out sometimes, and if not, it's ok. The majority wins. Have fun with that new camera.

I consider you one of my 'quilt gurus', because the designs you use are not difficult--it's how you combine those designs that make your quilting so special. As for those that don't like dense quilting, just add more space between the stitches.

Oh my gosh, the back of that is going to be A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Hey, don't let negative Nancy get to you. I DO understand what they may be saying as my mom gave me a quilt that was amazingly quilted, and had lots of it. It is a very heavy quit and it is not cuddly, but oh wow, is it gorgeous! Maybe they were just trying to say that. Whatever though, you ROCK and don't worry about it. What you do, you are the best at. Period!!!!!

ReplyDeleteI said it since I found you, that your quilting is magnificent and I'm in awe of your talent. In fact, when I grew up I want to be like you ROFLMAO (oh never mind, I am very much grown up). Here in Sweden we have a cartoon "Bamse, the strongest bear in the world" and he have a saying "om du inte kan säga nåt snällt, så säg inventing alls". Roughly translated "if you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing". It's easy to say "don't mind the other side" but I do know how much it hurts when people are less than kind about you and your creations. But, I think that there are many more of us that loves what you are doing (I can spend soooo much time trying to figure out how on earth you do it) than there are nasties out there. ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that I missed this until now... I also love your quilting. My husband's cousin works with your brother-in-law apparently, and I'll admit I was almost a little star-struck when I found out. =) I'm at the point where the quilting I do is functional, and my clients mostly just want their layers held together, so I don't get a lot of opportunity to practice detailed quilting.

I think your quilting is amazing! The way you can turn a beautiful quilt into a work of art; the way you can see intricate designs in an otherwise blank space; the way your love adds life to a quilt (kind of like adding love to a meal). Nevermind the Negative Nellies!
ReplyDeleteHave fun with your new camera! I recommend getting the Canon 50mm F1.8 lens to do some nice closeup shots with awesome bokeh. It's an inexpensive must have in your camera bag.
ReplyDeleteYeah, what everyone else said! The majority of my quilts I want softer so they will drape nicely on the bed. But there are one or two special quilts that would be so enhanced by your type of quilting. In my opinion, not every quilt needs custom quilting, just like not every quilt needs a border. Your work is stunning!!

Having said that, if you (or any other blogger on any subject) has a comment section attached to your(their) blog, you should expect and accept all comments. That is not a license to leave mean spirited, hurtful words, but a difference of opinion should not be looked upon as being necessarily ignorant. If you only want positive comments, isnt that kind of like fishing for compliments? You dont need to! (I hope that doesnt sound negative!) Your work is wonderful, and you should KNOW that, and not let others opinions diminish that!!!

ReplyDeleteLong time follower, first time commenter. :) Just wanted to chime in with the others! Please don't take the mean spirited commentators on Facebook to heart. It's facebook. Your posts are public and, therefore, are reaching people who may not even like quilting. They may neither understand your passion for quilting nor appreciate the beauty of your work. Or, as others have said, they say mean things because they are spiteful and jealous of how talented you are. You have such an amazing gift for quilting and I, for one, am so incredibly grateful that you share you works with all of us. Please keep the photos coming! You are so amazing! :)
