Harriot by Sue Cody

B1
Okay, so I am thrilled to finally share with you the final results of this beautiful quilt, Harriot.  This is another masterpiece by Sue Cody and appliqued to perfection by Beth, you have seen some of her other work on here - most recently, Sweet Surrender. Beth is an amazing appliquer and I am thrilled to be able to work on her quilt tops.

B2
This time I wanted to share with you Beth's work.  You can see in the picture above how small her stitches are and how precise the hand stitching is.  I am still in awe of her work, so thrilled to have a part of it.

B3
I only used 1 layer of batting for this quilt top.  It is going to hang on a wall, so no need for the double layer- plus, that was Beth's request.

B4
Whenever I am working with a lot of applique I have to free motion quilt from one side to the other, I work my way to the applique, stitch around it and then fill all around.  You can see that if you look carefully at the picture above.

B5
Beth requested that I do a similar fill that I had done on a previous quilt of hers, you can see that here. I definitely added more detail and feathers in this quilt and I think the end result is fantastic.

B6
I used almost a full cone of 60wt Glide thread and over 13 Magna Glide Bobbins

B7
I ended up needing my straight ruler for the diamond shapes and my purple disappearing marker for the diamonds as well, other than that - this quilting was all free-motion work on my A1 Elite Longarm.

B8
It is so fun to look at the applique and I really love the quilting in the background. It makes the applique look like it was placed on top.  That is my ultimate goal when quilting with applique.

B9
If you look at the applique, you see all the fussy cutting that went on.  Amazing!  Also, I had a lot of fun with some of the flies.  I made the quilting look like they were in motion.

B10
Fun close up.

B11
Here is another look at the flies in motion, I just love it!  I really had fun quilting this top.

B12
I just love the texture of the quilt.  I hope you are enjoying it as well.  I can tell you that the pictures do not give this quilt justice.  It is so beautiful in person.

B14
I look at this quilt with so much awe.  The designer, Sue Cody is amazing - the appliquer, Beth is equally amazing in her skill and then I had the chance to quilt it.  It takes 3 people to create a masterpiece and I am happy to be a part of it.

B
And, the back!  I couldn't share this finish without sharing the back of the quilt.  It looks amazing with all that texture.

Okay, so on to the next project!  I have lots of fun ideas for new patterns that will come out later this year.  So, stay tuned for my next quilting adventure!

  1. I'm kind of speechless this is so gorgeous. Every aspect of this is just wonderful. Kinda makes me rethink that "no applique" policy of mine. Congrats to all of you that brought this to life.

  2. Stunning! Do you use a ruler for the circles? They are so perfectly round! But then, you look like you get loads of practice. I'm in awe. My free motion work looks very amateur next to yours. I do mostly edge to edge pantographs for my customers. I found my way here from whoop Whoop Friday. Nice to meet you.

  14. Fantastic - thanks for explaining the process. Question; do you stitch in the ditch around each applique piece?

  18. Judi, this is one of those blog posts that makes me want to run out to Best Buy and get a GIANT monitor, just so I can enlarge all of the photos! You are so right; the best quilts do tend to be collaborations between designers, piecers/applique stitchers, and quilters. The applique work is exquisite and your whimsical quilting fill pattern perfectly enhances the applique without upstaging it. Truly a masterpiece. Thank you for sharing!

  20. I find it challenging to find the words to describe the sheer beauty that is this masterpiece ... stunning, arresting, gorgeous come to mind but don't adequately convey the magnitude of emotion it elicits. This quilt should be on display in the Louvre or other world-class museum, or in the lobby of a busy downtown building, so thousands and thousands of people can feast their eyes upon it. Kudos to you, Judy, and to Beth and Sue. Tremendous work of art, thanks for sharing so many closeups! ~Diana Kastelic from Toronto

  21. This is one of the most beautiful quilts I have ever seen. Congratulations to all of you. It reminds me of artist Grandma Moses and her art work. Fascinating.
