Quilting day with my daughter....

1
It is a rare day when I do not have a quilt on the racks on a Saturday, but this last Saturday I did.  Lili made a quilt using one layer cake during the summer for a surprise birthday gift for her brother, but we haven't gotten to the quilting until now.  So, it's going to be a Christmas present now.  Anyway, she was so excited to know that she was going to be quilting. So, I walked her through the whole process.  She put the quilt on the racks, pins and all.  I just watched and helped when she needed it.

 2
I lowered my table as low as I could and it was still a little reach for her.

 3
I love her cute little determined face.

4
It took her about 4 hours to quilt the whole quilt, by the end of her time quilting she told me her arms were sore.  Now she understands what I do - I love it!

5
One quilt pieced and quilted by my 8 year old.  This is her first big quilt.

 6
The best part of the day was spending time with her.  I am so happy that she has taken an interest in quilting and I am happy to share what I know with her.  I am going to make an effort to give her a little time on my machine every now and again so that she can develop her own talents.

7
Loops and more loops, she did a beautiful job for her first time quilting.

I'm one proud mama!

  6. That's awesome. I have a 9 year old who quilted a quilt for her 3rd grade teacher at the end of the school year. She finished and then announced WOW that is really hard work and now I think I'm cross eyed. Thanks for sharing your daughter's work.

  20. What a lovely quilt! Thanks for sharing this with us. I'm sure you both must be so happy with the results. I've been thinking about letting my son try his hand at making a quilt. He's always sitting beside me as I quilt and peppering me with questions as I go along. Seeing how well your daughter did, I may just have to float the idea and see if he's interested!!

  22. This is a treasure you will never forget. Quilting with your daughter. Never to young to start learning the art.I started about 4 years old sewing and quilting with my mom. That was 50 some years ago. I have gone from hand quilting to machine quilting.

I think this is one of my all time favorite posts since I have been reading your blog. It totally gave me the most excellent "Warm Fuzzies" looking at her beautiful, determined face. I have been a little down today and this wonderful post cheered me right up. Thank you so much for sharing mom/daughter time with us. And please give your sweet girl a big hug for me and tell her how much better my day is after reading about her and seeing her in action. Looks like you have a future quilting star following in your footsteps. Big Hugs ....

  59. Wow -- that's her FIRST TRY?! She did a fantastic job! Apparently she has inherited the quilting genes from her mama!

I've just started teaching my 10-year old son to quilt, but he's in the early stages. Now that he's practiced enough that he can do a fairly consistent 1/4" seam on my Featherweight, he's starting to sew strips together for one of those fence rail patterns. The only thing better than time to work on your own quilts is having time to teach your child how to do it, too! :-)
