Jan's quilt finished.

1
Okay, I have had this quilt on the racks for a bit.  It's huge!  It is so beautiful though.  Jan did a beautiful job piecing this quilt top.  This is a pattern by Judy Martin and can be found in her book Stellar Quilts. I used a combo of 100% cotton and an 80/20 blend batting.  The top thread was Glide and the bobbin thread was So Fine.
 2
Here is Jan's description of her quilt in her own words:
I always loved Barbara Brackman's Morris Workshop line; it is as close as I have gotten to buying any civil war type of prints.  I have made two smaller quilts from this line, by then I ordered Judy Martin's book on Stellar Quilts and fell in love with this Capistrano design and felt the Morris Workshop would give me the look I wanted.  I had run out of a large majority of the original fat quarters and had to search and search for stores who still had a few pieces of this line still in stock.  Working as a full time teacher, I only had time on vacations to quilt so this is a quilt 3 years in the making (besides, it is huge).  I was so surprised how easily the quilt went together as I was so worried that the star borders would not fit, but the pattern was perfect and I couldn't have been more pleased.

Thanks Jan!

Jan asked for a little bit of feathering for the quilt and I decided to use my feather swirl for the filler design.  I love how it turned out.

4
I wanted to use diamonds in the wide open spaces to mimic the diamonds found throughout the design.

 5
This is the center of the quilt and I wanted it to really be a focal point of the quilting design.

 6
These feather motifs are free motion quilted, I had the path figured out after the third triangle block I quilted.

7
I really love how these diamond block designs turned out.  It just gives it a great dimension.

8
So, a close up of the feather swirl motif.  It really was fun to quilt.

9
I quilted a double connecting curve in the diamonds and they give the quilting a soft look.

 10
I wanted the design of the points to be showcased, so I quilted a straight line1/4 inch away from the points.  Yes, I marked each line and used my straight ruler to make sure the lines were straight.

 11
The inside triangles were quilted differently than the outside triangles.  I really like how they turned out.

12
Love.

 13
The points in this quilt are just amazing.

15
As I was taking pictures of the quilt I realized that I missed one triangle.  So frustrating!  But, it has been fixed.  It's always a pain to add a quilt back on the racks though.

16
Thanks Jan for letting me work on your quilt.  It was really fun.

Now on to the next project!

  4. Dear Judi

I bought the book because of this pattern more than a year ago. The original was done with calico's. Seeing it done in Morris, gave me an idea to use another line of fabric which I have a lot of fabric of. It takes someone else's take on a pattern to show us the path. The Dear Jane you quilted a while back, it inspired me to start one, with white background fabrics. Up until that point, I only used cream background fabric.

Thank you for the beautiful inspiration you give us, with your amazing quilting.

  13. This quilt has such a pretty Fall feeling to it! I know they are stars, but something about the fabrics and the color palette makes me think of the leaves changing color and the cooler weather coming in. I'm in awe of the piecing skills, and your newest iterations of feathers and swirls complement this top beautifully. Another gorgeous finish -- congratulations to both of you!

  14. Fabulous, both the piecing and your quilting. I have the book Stellar Quilts but have have been too timid to try making any of the designs; they are not easy.

  30. I realize that you had to start somewhere, and that once upon a time you were a beginner. I tell myself that as I unsew the Butterflies from Chernobyl that I tried to free-motion quilt into my latest charity quilt. Even charity quilts deserve better than that. So I did doodles instead. My butterflies need WAY more practice.

  38. Judi, I just received the quilt
in the mail this afternoon (in fact,my husband was so anxious to see it, he opened the package and had it laid out on the pool table for me when I got home from school)
and it is stunningly more beautiful
than the pictures show (which is
so hard to believe). I paper-pieced the whole thing (yay, for perfect points) and it seemed to
take SOOO long to finish it, and, of course, tear off the paper. It will be treasured in our family.
Thanks so much for your expertise
and sense of design. I am thrilled.

    Jan K.
